Birch bowls Warriors to win

Bloemfontein - The Chevrolet Warriors finally broke their SuperSport Series duck for the season when they pulled off a memorable come-from-behind victory over the Chevrolet Knights by 2 wickets at the Diamond Oval on Saturday.

The Warriors had trailed by 91 runs on the first innings but they turned the match around by bowling the Knights out for 120 in their second innings. That meant they needed 212 for victory and they just managed to get their noses across the line in an exciting finish.

It was the second day in a row on which 16 wickets had fallen.

Andrew Birch of the Warriors was named SuperSport Series Man of the Match for his career best return of 9/101 (4/68 and 5/33) and it was appropriate that he was on strike when the winning runs were scored. Johan van der Wath also finished the match with 9 wickets for the Knights.

The Smuts brothers were the main contributors to the Warriors’ successful victory chase – Jon-Jon making 86 off only 75 balls with 17 fours and a six and Kelly 38 off 36 balls with a four and 4 sixes.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras and the bizhub Highveld Lions will have to wait until Sunday’s final day at Paarl to decide which franchise has the first innings advantage in this high scoring match.

After Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn had scored centuries to enable the Lions to post a total of 458 on the first two days, the Cobras replied with two centuries of their own from Owais Shah (151 off 339 balls with 14 fours and 3 sixes) and Ryan Canning (106 not out off 245 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes). It was Shah’s 40th century and Canning’s fourth.

They came together early on the third morning after Dale Deeb had dismissed Justin Ontong and Justin Kemp with successive deliveries. The pair first got the Cobras through the second new ball and then built a stand of 176 for the sixth wicket in 71 overs to rule out any possibility of a substantial Lions lead.

The Cobras finished the day on 416/7 needing a further 42 to match the Lions’ first innings total. Deeb has so far taken 4/121 in a marathon stint of 55 overs.

Kyle Abbott returned the all-round performance of his young career when he helped the Nashua Dolphins achieve one of their best performances against the Nashua Titans at Sahara Willowmoore Park.

Having made a career best 80 in the Dolphins first innings he then took 5/53 to play the major role for dismissing the Titans for 193 and give his side a lead of 108 runs. Daryn Smit assisted with four of the dismissals behind the stumps and made five overall.

A sixth wicket would have given him career best bowling figures as well but he nevertheless captured the last wicket with a run out.

Bad weather has played havoc with the match so far and the Dolphins will be hard pressed to push on for an outright result. They finished the day on 1/0 for an overall lead of 109.
