Mulder, Frylinck star on bowlers day

Cape Town - Wiaan Mulder and Robbie Frylinck claimed 13 wickets between them on a manic second day as the Highveld Lions and the Dolphins reached the halfway stage of their Sunfoil Series clash with just about honours even in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

A combined total of 20 wickets fell on day two at Senwes Park, with the hosts first bowled out for 110 – a first innings deficit of 143 – before shooting out the visitors for a paltry 83.

With a victory target of 227 set, the Lions then reached stumps on 126/5, with most of their hopes resting on the shoulders of Kagiso Rapulana, unbeaten on 36.

However, the assured innings from the young middle-order batsman came after a day of mayhem as both Mulder and Frylinck recorded career-best efforts with their medium pace.

Frylinck took three of the last four wickets to fall for magical figures of 8/30 in 13 overs with the home side, who resumed on 79/6 overnight, managing to add just 31 more to their total.

The 32-year-old also posted the best-ever figures for the Dolphins, surpassing the 8/42 of Imran Tahir last season, while his return was the best at the venue and the best in the history of the fixture in the franchise era.

It was then the turn of 18-year-old rookie Mulder, playing in just his second first-class game, to shine as he sliced through the away teams’ line-up with astounding figures of 7/25 in 11.3 overs.

Only Khaya Zondo (44) stopped the Lions from completely embarrassing them as they were all out in 35.3 overs. Hardus Viljoen picked up 2/22.

Frylinck then took his tally to 11 wickets in the match with 3/26 in the second innings as the hosts limped to stumps still needing 101 - Mangaliso Mosehle (4) the other batsman alongside Rapulana at the close.
