Erwee ton helps Dolphins frustrate Titans

Cape Town - Sarel Erwee struck a century for the Dolphins on day three of their Sunfoil Series clash against the Titans in Durban on Saturday.

The opener made 108 (232 balls, 12 fours), his second first-class ton, although the match at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead appeared to be heading towards a draw.

The host had started out the day on 83/1 as they replied to the visitors’ 451/8 declared. They eventually themselves declared on 306/4 in a bid to take the game forward, but by stumps, the Titans had raced away to 78/0 – an overall lead of 223.

Erwee was the mainstay for the Dolphins earlier and received splendid support from Vaughn van Jaarsveld, who fell eight short of three figures himself with 92 (162 balls, 13 fours).

The pair shared in a 162-run partnership for the second wicket, before Marchant de Lange, the pick of the bowlers with 3/92, broke through.

Captain Morne van Wyk tried to be innovative by declaring 145 runs in arrears, but his bowlers failed to respond as the impressive Heino Kuhn and Dean Elgar batted largely untroubled until the close.

The prolific Kuhn was unbeaten on 50 (75 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) at stumps, extending his lead at the top of the batting charts in the process as he took his season aggregate beyond the 800-run mark.

Elgar was the other not out batsman on 22.
