Van Wyks steer Dolphins

Durban - Contrasting half-centuries from the two Van Wyks have allowed the Dolphins to make an aggressive declaration on day two of their Sunfoil Series match against the Highveld Lions at Kingsmead, but the Lions openers ensured there was no immediate reward for the home side’s positive play.

While Divan van Wyk scored 93 at a standard strike rate of around 50 to give the Dolphins a stable base, Morne van Wyk hit 57 from 61 balls to set up the declaration at 329 for seven.

That left the Lions with a tricky half-hour, but Stephen Cook (13 not out) and Rassie van der Dussen (26 not out) stood firm to see the visitors to stumps on 40 without loss.

Day one of the encounter had been lost to the weather and so both sides had a sense of urgency.

The Lions won the toss and opted to field first, but opening batsmen, Imraan Khan (39) and Divan van Wyk, negated any early assistance for the Lions seamers as they constructed a 70-run stand.

That was ended when Cliffe Deacon had Khan caught behind by Sizwe Masondo, the Soweto-born wicketkeeper, who was making his debut for the Lions.

When Khaya Zondo and Cody Chetty departed to Hardus Viljoen in the space of nine balls the Dolphins were in a little bit of bother at 140 for three, but Van Wyk put on 65 for the fourth wicket with Sarel Erwee (34).

Another double-strike saw both batsmen fall in quick succession, with Erwee becoming 18-year-old debutant Kagiso Rabada’s first wicket at this level, but Morne van Wyk smashed nine boundaries as the Dolphins went after quick runs before declaring.

Kyle Abbott, Daryn Dupavillon and the game’s other debutant, 22-year-old fast bowler Matthew Pillans, were unable to make inroads, leaving the Lions trailing by 289 runs with all of their first-innings wickets in hand.
