Pointless first day for Knights

Bloemfontein - A disappointing day in the field all but ended what little hope the Knights had of winning the Sunfoil Series, and even put their second place in jeopardy as the Dolphins enjoyed an excellent first day at Chevrolet Park.

The Dolphins racked up a score of 305 for two in 96 overs after winning the toss, which meant that the Knights were yet to record a bonus point at the close of play.

With the Cape Cobras enjoying a solid day’s batting in their final encounter, the Knights are effectively out of contention for the trophy and will now need to focus their efforts on avoiding defeat to the Dolphins.

Just 11 points separated the two sides before the game started, and so a Dolphins victory would likely see them leapfrog the Knights and claim the R600 000 prize for finishing second.

The visitors’ efforts were led by Divan van Wyk’s third century of the competition, but none of the four batsmen who made it to the crease registered a failure.

Imraan Khan shared a 169-run opening stand with Van Wyk and scored a patient 83, while Khaya Zondo was 70 not out at stumps and Cody Chetty was unbeaten on 14.

The Knights endured a long day and clearly missed Quinton Friend, who failed to overcome a hamstring strain in time to take the field.

Malusi Siboto and Friend’s replacement, Duanne Olivier, were the two bowlers to have some success, with the latter breaking the opening partnership when he had Khan caught behind, and Siboto dismissing Van Wyk shortly before the close of play.

The one bright spot for the Knights was the return from injury of Dean Elgar, who has overcome an Achilles’ problem.
