Knights have mountain to climb

Johannesburg - A century partnership between Qaasim Adams and Mangaliso Mosehle swung the Sunfoil Series clash at SuperSport Park definitively in favour of The Unlimited Titans, leaving the Chevrolet Knights with a tricky final day ahead of them.

Adams and Mosehle came together with the Titans 106 for four in their second innings and with the Knights eyeing a way back into the game. By the time the pair was parted they had added 105 and taken the game beyond the Knights, who now look set to miss out on the victory that would advance their title hopes.

The Titans went on to declare on 286 for seven to set a target of 435, before the Knights went to stumps on 32 without loss in reply.

Marchant de Lange made the first impact on the day when he claimed two wickets in two overs to wrap up the Knights first innings quickly.

The Knights resumed on 212 for eight but added just six runs before De Lange’s strikes, leaving them with a first-innings deficit of 148.

There appeared to be no way back into the game, but Corne Dry took two wickets and Johan van der Wath and Malusi Siboto grabbed one each to give the visitors a sniff.

The hope didn’t last long, though, as Adams and Mosehle batted intelligently to extend the Titans’ lead to 359.

Obus Pienaar ended the stand when he had Mosehle caught behind for 56, while Adams (84) became Van der Wath’s second victim soon afterwards.

David Wiese and Juan de Villiers added some quick runs before the declaration, which left 14 overs for the Knights to bat out.

The visitors opted for the pragmatic approach, so openers Reeza Hendricks and Gihahn Cloete will go into the final day with 403 runs required for an unlikely victory.
