Hamstring issue for Philander

Cape Town - The Cape Cobras received a big blow in their four-day clash against the Titans when seamer Vernon Philander left the field with a hamstring injury on Thursday.

Philander bowled just five overs before limping off in the Sunfoil Series clash at Newlands, posting figures of one for 14.

He sustained a grade one hamstring tear, which could see him struggle to be fit for the Proteas' first Test against New Zealand, starting here on January 2.

Well-known sports broadcaster, Gerald de Kock, confirmed the news on Twitter.

"Vernon Philander out of action for Cobras due to Gr1 tear of left hamstring on 1st morning of #sunfoilseries match vs Nashua Titans," De Kock tweeted from the ground on Thursday.

Proteas Team Manager, Mohammed Moosajee, said Philander will play no further part as a bowler against the Titans.

“MRI scans revealed that Vernon suffered a grade one strain to his left hamstring. Injuries of this type usually have a 10 to 14 day recovery period.

"We will assess the injury as the week progresses, and this will help determine whether his availability for the Test series will be affected. At this point he will not bowl again during the match and will only bat if necessary," said Moosajee.

The Titans were dismissed for 192 in their first innings, with the Cobras finishing the day on 132 without loss.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
