Dolphins rout winless Titans

Centurion - The Dolphins thumped the Titans by 393 runs to end a bleak Sunfoil Series campaign for the defending champions, who ended the four-day competition without a single win.

Set 463 to win, the Titans crumbled to 69 all out in just 21 overs, as Keshav Maharaj snared a maiden five-wicket haul in franchise cricket for the visitors, who also ended their season with three wins in a row.

The Dolphins, who had won the toss and elected to bat first on day one, set their victory up by amassing 456 all out in their first innings, with Vaughn van Jaarsveld (101), Khaya Zondo (51) and Daryn Smit (79) the stars for the visitors.

By contrast, the Titans could only manage 218 in their innings, as Mthokozisi Shezi snared four wickets to hand the initiative firmly to the Dolphins. Instead of enforcing the follow-on, the Dolphins chose to bat on in their second knock, and Van Jaarsveld capped a fine personal display by clubbing 83 quick-fire runs on the third morning.

He received handy support form Divan van Wyk, who chiselled out a typical 57 at the top of the order. When the declaration came, the Dolphins set about running through the Titans with surprising ease, as the hosts wilted to a calamitous, mid-innings wobble, which saw them lose five wickets for just six runs, to plummet from 51/4 to 57/9 in the space of five overs.

Maharaj, extracting turn and bowling to an attacking field, thrived in the circumstances, picking up the scalps of Farhaan Behardien, Mangaliso Mosehle, Marchant de Lange, CJ de Villiers and, fittingly, bowling Rowan Richards to end the innings with wonderful figures of 5-11, a career-best for the left-arm spinner.

The Dolphins picked up a mammoth 20 points for their total display, with the Titans earning just 5.36 to end their campaign on the lowest possible note.

Van Jaarsveld was chosen as man of the match for his two brilliant knocks.
