East London - The Dolphins took control of the Sunfoil Series match against a spirited arriors as the hosts moved to 52 for two at stumps on Saturday, with another 311 runs needed for a win at Buffalo Park.

Full scorecard

Davy Jacobs, on 19, and Ashwell Prince, on 8, will resume on Sunday.

Bad light stopped play on two occasions after tea and 40 overs were lost due to the elements. It also started drizzling after tea, which added to the cricket-misery in both change rooms.

Jacobs, who scored a superb century in the victory against the Titans, and the former international star, Prince, will face a daunting task in their quest to chase down 363 for victory off 90 overs on Sunday.

The Dolphins resumed on Saturday on 57 for two, an overall lead of 199 runs. They were dismissed for 220 mid-way through the afternoon session. This was thanks to lion-hearted efforts from the fast bowlers, Basheer Walters, who managed 3-75 in nineteen overs, and Andrew Birch, who captured 3-48 in twenty overs.

Walters picked up three wickets in the morning session.  He accounted for Imraan Khan, who was caught by Ashwell Prince at second slip for 17. He also took two late wickets in the morning spell to send Daryn Smit packing for 4, and Kyle Abbott for 12.

Birch played a critical role with a double-break in his morning spell. Cody Chetty scored 32 off 73 deliveries with five boundaries and a six. He added 64 runs with Vaughn van Jaarsveld for the fourth wicket. Birch then bowled Chetty and removed Andrew Miller for a duck two balls later.

Both fast bowlers worked incredibly hard and their controlled aggression contributed to the fact that the ball moved off the seam and occasionally found the edge of the bat.

After lunch, Van Jaarsveld and Prenelan Subrayen proved difficult to dislodge as they cantered from 162 for seven to 201 for seven before the Warriors introduced the occasional leg-spinner, Colin Ingram. He had Subrayen caught and bowled for 23. Six balls later he ended Van Jaarsveld’s delightful innings, which yielded 73 runs off 145 balls with eight fours.

Ingram then trapped Craig Alexander in front and finished with remarkable figures of 3-8 in 2.1 overs.

The Warriors, faced with a daunting task of scoring 363 for a win, started off in cavalier fashion. Michael Price carved four fours and powered the Warriors to 32 in 4.4 overs before he was bowled by Abbott for 20. Jon-Jon Smuts also got carried away by the need to play brave cricket and holed out to Miller at cover for 3 as the Warriors slipped to 39 for 2.
