Durban - Teenager Daryn Dupavillon has made a dream debut to franchise cricket by grabbing a five-wicket haul to put the Dolphins on top on the opening day of their domestic four-day encounter against the Warriors in Durban on Thursday.

The right-arm fast bowler took five for 43 as the hosts, riding on a high after beating the Cape Cobras in the T20 Challenge final last Sunday, dismissed the visitors for just 173 at Kingsmead.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj also played a role with four for 38, before the Dolphins reached the close on 51 without loss -- a deficit of 122.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, Lance Klusener's men had the hosts in check from the outset, but it was the introduction of 19-year-old Dupavillon that spelt trouble for the Warriors as he sent down a double-wicket maiden first up .

That left the total on 14 for two and he had a third wicket just after the first hour of play, with Maharaj then dismissing Colin Ingram leg before wicket for 20 on the stroke of lunch, Dupavillon had key man Ashwell Prince out for 34 straight after lunch, while Maharaj bagged the final three wickets, including that of top-scorer Davy Jacobs for 51 to bundle out the Warriors in 74.2 overs.

Imraan Khan (36) and Divan van Wyk (15) batted out the final hour to put their side in control at stumps.

In Cape Town, defending champions the Cobras enjoyed an equally fruitful day despite being bowled out for a modest 255 by the Highveld Lions, who won the toss and chose to bowl first. The home side then came out strongly with the ball to put the Gauteng outfit on the back foot, as they reached the close on 36 for three, 219 runs behind.

The competition's top wicket-taker Beuran Hendricks, fresh from the news he had won an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract earlier in the day, finished with one for 16 and Dane Paterson took two for eight leaving their side well-placed.

Earlier Cobras skipper Justin Ontong top-scored with 88 and Yaseen Vallie made 70, with Imran Tahir the pick of the Lions bowlers after bagging four for 62.

Finally in Kimberley, the top-of-the-table Knights and the bottom side Titans were evenly poised after day one following a late comeback by the visitors.

After winning the toss and batting, the Knights looked in total control at 202 for three, before they lost the last seven wickets for 88 to be all out for 290.

Rudi Second was their main man, making 69, with Rilee Rossouw (52) and Obus Pienaar (48) also contributing.

But it was the five wickets for 44 of David Wiese that helped the Pretoria side come back into the contest and they will begin their innings first thing on Friday.
