Cobras close in on innings win

Johannesburg - Dane Piedt and Justin Kemp each claimed five wickets on day three to put the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras within reach of an innings victory over the bizhub Highveld Lions at Bidvest Wanderers.

Just 11 wickets had fallen over the opening two days of the match, but on Saturday the Cobras bowlers found more assistance to bowl the Lions out for 201 and then reduce them to 124 for five following on.

That meant the hosts still trailed by 219 runs with just five wickets remaining, and faced a tough final day if they are to avoid a heavy defeat.

The Cobras, meanwhile, are five wickets away from sealing their successful Sunfoil Series campaign in the finest of fashions.

Such an almighty collapse seemed unlikely when the Lions began the day on 111 for one, but they lost Rassie van der Dussen for 74 after just seven overs.

Devon Conway was next to go when he was caught off the bowling of Piedt, before the off spinner trapped Temba Bavuma lbw for 51.

The rest of the innings folded quickly with nobody else making more than 13 as Kemp recorded figures of 3 for 30 and Dane Paterson took 3 for 47.

Kemp made an early impact in the Lions’ second innings when he had Stephen Cook caught behind, before Van der Dussen and Bavuma steadied the ship - as they had done in the home side’s first dig.

However, Piedt opened the floddgates when he got Bavuma (34) for the second time in the day, then dismissed Conway and Shaylen Pillay to finish the day with figures of 3 for 45 in the second innings and 5 for 91 overall.
