Birch, Harmer halt Dolphins

East London - The Warriors would have been the happier of the two change rooms after the first day of the Sunfoil Series match by restricting the visiting Dolpins to 296 at Buffalo Park on Thursday.

The Warriors, spearheaded by Andrew Birch, who captured 3-67 in nineteen overs, and Simon Harmer, who was superb as off-spinner by taking 3-76 in 25 overs, did well to take ten wickets on a strip favouring the batting side.

The visitors hit back straight away when Davy Jacobs, the Warriors captain, was caught behind by Daryn Smit off Kyle Abbott for a duck in the first over.

Michael Price and Basheer Walters will resume on 7-1 on Friday.

The Dolphins won the toss and elected to bat, but lost their way in the morning session through injudicious shots and poor discipline as they were wobbling on 99 for four at lunch.

Jonathan Vandiar and Vaughn van Jaarsveld briefly put the Warriors to the sword in the morning session by adding 42 runs off only 36 balls.

But, once Vandiar was caught and bowled by Kelly Smuts for 38 (37 balls, eight fours), the pendulum swung back in favour of the hosts.

Shortly after the dismissal of Vandiar, Harmer bowled Van Jaarsveld for 18 to reduce the visitors to 98 for four.

After lunch, Daryn Smit and Cody Chetty rallied to give the scorecard an air of respectability. They defied the Warriors bowling attack for 136 minutes as they shared in a 94-run partnership for the sixth wicket to carry the Dolphins to 233-6.

Smit was trapped in front by Gurshwin Rabie for 39. He faced 103 deliveries and stroked a four and a six.

As is often the case in a long partnership, Chetty departed the scene shortly afterwards when he had a rush of blood and tried to heave the off-spinner Simon Harmer out of the ground, only to be stumped on 77.

He hit ten fours and faced 166 balls.

His departure saw the Dolphins slip to 235 for seven.

Abbott hit a delivery by Rabie straight to Michael Price at mid-on and was removed for four, reducing the visitors to 243 for eight. Rabie redeemed himself after a poor early spell in which he conceded 25 runs in two overs. He finished with 2-45 in nine overs.

Dane Paterson rallied briefly in a tenth-wicket stand of 27 runs with Craig Alexander.
