Johannesburg – Dale Steyn’s frustration is building and he wishes he could vent it on a few batsmen.
Steyn, who last year was crowned as the International Cricket Council’s Test player of the year and also Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) player of the year, has only been able to play in three of the Bangalore Royal Challengers’ games in the Indian Premier League (IPL) because of a fracture to his left thumb.
“It’s bad to have to sit out like this and watch the other guys play,” admitted Steyn. However, he hopes to be available for a possible semifinal and final, if his team advances.
Steyn saw a hand specialist this week and has been advised to rest another 10 days.
CSA don’t hold out much hope of Steyn still playing in the IPL. However, he should be ready to take part in the Twenty20 World Cup in England from next month.
“I am someone who has to bowl to maintain my best form,” said Steyn. “That is why I don’t like sitting around waiting to play again. I should at least be rested for the Twenty20 tournament.”
Steyn’s coach at the Royal Challengers, Ray Jennings, described him as a “good lad”, who is “always eager to play”.
“It’s a big setback for us that he missed almost the entire IPL,” said Jennings.
Another of the Challengers’ South African players, Roelof van der Merwe, is struggling with a shoulder injury.
However, he should still be considered for Thursday’s game against the Chennai Super Kings in Durban.
