Centurion. – South Africa will struggle to take 20 wickets in a Test against Australia.

That is the view of Jamie Siddons, the Australian tasked with the tough assignment of coaching Bangladesh.

Siddons said here on Tuesday that Dale Steyn would trouble the Aussies with his pace and late swing.

“Morné Morkel can also ask a few questions of the Aussie batsmen if he sorts out his problems, but in general I don’t believe South Africa will easily take 20 wickets in a Test,” said Siddons.

'Be very competitive'

Siddons played only a single one-day international for Australia, but was a prolific batsman for South Australia and Victoria. He expects the series in Australia to be closely contested.

“South Africa have a good enough batting line-up to post big scores and be very competitive,” he said.

As far as Bangladesh is concerned, he put their lack of progress down to administrators ringing the changes too often. At one stage they regularly changed coaches.

“There was no long-term planning or thought into how the team could be developed over a period of five years,” he said.

“There was also a setback when 10 of the front-line players joined the Indian Cricket League. Many of them were players I helped develop.

'Right guy'

“One day they were still there and then suddenly they were just gone. That includes three of our top-order batsmen. We have not yet been able to adequately replace them.”

Siddons believes there are a few potential world class performers among the current crop.

“I believe Mohammed Ashraful is the right guy to lead the team. Nobody else could be the captain right now,” he said.

“I doubt whether there will be a significant difference if you have someone like Graeme Smith to captain this side. Most of the players are still children and very raw.”
