Cape Town - Albie Morkel has been called up to replace Dean Elgar in the Proteas’ squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The first of five matches will be played at Boland Park, Paarl, on Wednesday (14:30 start).
Elgar, who was scheduled to make his international debut in this series, suffered a knee injury while playing for the Knights against the Cape Cobras this past weekend. It is feared that he may have suffered ligament injury which could necessitate surgery.
Morkel has played relatively little cricket this season after being injured while playing at the Nokia Champions League in India and then having to undergo surgery at the start of the South African summer.
He, however, proved that he is back to his best while playing for the Titans against the Warriors in the SuperSport Series match at Willowmoore Park. He scored a century in the first innings followed by a half-century in the second and also took important wickets.
He will join the Proteas’ squad on Monday after completion of the four-day match on Sunday.
Revised South Africa squad:
Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (captain), JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
