Potchefstroom - Ethy Mbhalati bowled Bangladesh A opening batsman Shamsur Rahman with the last ball of the day to give South Africa A a slight edge on the opening day of the first four-day test between the two sides at Senwes Park on Thursday.
Live scoring: South Africa A vs Bangladesh A
Bangladesh, who had won the toss, finished the day on 12/1 in reply to the home side’s first innings total of 301/7 declared.
The early breakthrough rewarded Jacques Rudolph’s enterprising decision to declare in the last half hour, leaving his new ball bowlers, Mbhalati and Quinton Friend, five overs to have a crack at the visitors and the move paid off.
Rudolph could have batted on as Heino Kuhn, closing in on 5 000 first-class runs, and Friend had added 25 runs for the unbroken eighth wicket in three overs and were well placed to push further ahead.
The South Africans would have been a little bit disappointed with their batting effort in which most of the players got starts but failed to convert. The one exception was Justin Ontong who fell seven runs short of his fourth century of the season (93 off 102 balls with 13 fours). Ontong has average in the 50s this season which is well below his career average of 37 and is showing signs of reaching maturity at the age of 31.
Ontong and Stiaan van Zyl (48 off 101 balls with 8 fours) were responsible for the innings only noteworthy partnership, putting on 115 for the fifth wicket.
Rabiul Islam was the most successful Bangladeshi bowler taking 3/56 in 20 overs.
