Proteas: Kallis back, Faf axed

Cape Town - Jacques Kallis is back in the Proteas squad for the three-match ODI series against both Pakistan and India taking place in November and December respectively.

Kallis, a veteran of 321 matches in the 50 overs format, played his last ODI against New Zealand in February, 2012.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named a 14-man squad for the series. “The return of Kallis means that Faf du Plessis has to drop out,” commented CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson.

“As well as Ryan McLaren and Wayne Parnell have done as emerging all-rounders, it is very welcome news to have Jacques back as our premium all-rounder. There is no substitute for the experience he brings to the game. We have a number of young batting talents in the squad such as Quinton de Kock and David Miller and the more experience they have around them, the better it will be for their development.

“Graeme Smith also returns to the squad after making a complete recovery from his injury.

“We have dropped Robbie Peterson out of the squad as Imran Tahir is in outstanding form and we are unlikely to use more than one specialist spinner in a home series. He will be able to gain valuable time in the middle playing in the Sunfoil Series.”

Proteas ODI squad:

AB de Villiers (Titans, captain), Hashim Amla (Cape Cobras), Quinton de Kock (Highveld Lions), JP Duminy (Cape Cobras), Imran Tahir (Highveld Lions), Jacques Kallis (Cape Cobras), Ryan McLaren (Knights), David Miller (Dolphins), Morné Morkel (Titans), Wayne Parnell (Warriors), Vernon Philander (Cape Cobras), Graeme Smith (Cape Cobras), Dale Steyn (Cape Cobras), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Highveld Lions)

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
