Morkel rises in ICC rankings

Cape Town - Morne Morkel has achieved a career best ranking of No. 3 in the latest ICC Test rankings released after the completion of the latest round of five-day matches.

This confirms that the Proteas currently possess the form new ball combination in the world with Dale Steyn at No. 1 and Morkel at No. 3.

Paul Harris (14) and Jacques Kallis (20) are the other Proteas in the top 20 while Kallis remains the world’s leading all-rounder.

Not surprisingly Proteas’ players feature prominently in the batting rankings with Kallis (4), Graeme Smith (7) and Hashim Amla (8) all in the top 10. They all scored centuries in South Africa’s most recent Test against Pakistan.

AB de Villiers (13) gives the Proteas a fourth batsman in the Top 20.

The latest team rankings will only be released at the conclusion of the series involving No. 1 ranked India and No. 2 ranked South Africa but India will definitely drop points having drawn their first two matches against New Zealand. The third match starts at Nagpur on Saturday.

Whether the Proteas can close the 11-point gap between the two sides will depend largely on their ability to win their second Test against Pakistan which starts at Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
