Bloemfontein – Colin Ingram created at least two memorable landmarks for himself and South Africa in the first one-day international against Zimbabwe at Outsurance Oval here on Friday.
Scoreboard
The left-handed top-order batsman from the Warriors, 25, registered a century on debut as the Proteas worked their way toward a really imposing total after opting to bat first.
He became the first South African to achieve that milestone in a maiden appearance – he already sports two Twenty20 international caps -- and only the sixth player of all time.
The first was England’s Dennis Amiss against Australia at Manchester in 1972, and the most recent – until Ingram’s sparkling intrusion – Martin Guptill of New Zealand, who notched 122 not out against West Indies at Auckland in January last year.
Others have been West Indies’ Desmond Haynes (the highest ODI debutant knock thus far of 148), Andy Flower of Zimbabwe – his brother Grant is playing here -- and Pakistan’s Saleem Elahi.
Ingram was finally dismissed for 124 with two overs left of the Proteas innings, having faced 126 balls and struck eight fours and two sixes.
Opener Hashim Amla had earlier been run out for 110, and was responsible for putting the minnows on the back foot from the very outset of their turn in the field.
Rather earlier in his meticulous, cool-headed innings, marked by the way he caressed the ball around against the various Zimbabwean spinners, Ingram eclipsed Shaun Pollock for the highest South African ODI score on debut.
Pollock had managed a run-a-ball 66 not out against England at Newlands on January 9 1996, in the first ODI.
In a game also marking the ODI debuts of Jacques Kallis and Paul Adams, the all-rounder later claimed bowling figures of four for 34 as South Africa squeezed home by six runs and he was a shoe-in for the man-of-the-match award.
Amla’s ton was an even more up-tempo effort than Ingram’s – he had got to three figures off only 87 balls -- and his third in six ODI innings.
