SA's India Tests canned

Cape Town – The Proteas’ intended three-Test series in India later this season has been cancelled, in a move likely to spark a fresh furore about the sustainability and protection of the five-day format.

Sport24 learnt on Monday that the intended series has been shelved, despite no official announcement being forthcoming at the time of writing.

Cricket South Africa media officer Michael Owen-Smith said the visit would be “one-day internationals only” and that fixtures had not yet been set. The Proteas are scheduled to leave for the ODIs at the end of January.

It is fairly common for India’s governing body, the BCCI, to leave international scheduling until fairly late because of the avalanche of obligations – many now of the Twenty20 variety -- facing the players from the world’s economic powerhouse in cricket terms.

But the sudden, mysterious jettisoning of the Tests is sure to cause a stir, given that the series would have represented a welcome clash between the world’s newest top-ranked nation and South Africa, who slipped to second at the weekend after India’s 2-0 home triumph over Sri Lanka.

India, assuming the rankings leadership for the first time -- ironically under a South African coach in Gary Kirsten -- moved to a rating of 124 with the Proteas just behind them on 122.

These teams last locked horns in Tests in India in 2007/08, when the series was shared 1-1, but there would have been extra gravitas this time given the enticing “one plays two” scenario.

Test devotees’ hopes have now been dashed and India, ironically, are likely to be toppled from their perch pretty soon, given that they will pay the price for a farcical situation which sees them set to not play a Test at home for nearly two years.

South Africa will return to No 1 anyway if they beat England by a two-Test margin over four encounters on our soil, starting at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on December 16.

The recently-published 2009 SA Cricket Annual, official organ of record of CSA, had the Proteas down to play India in three Tests and five ODIs in February and March 2010, in its “future tours” calendar on the last page of the book.

And the Sydney Morning Herald reported on Monday, in a story headed “India rule Test arena while trying to kill it”, that “a scheduled three (Indian) Tests against world No 2 South Africa has been cancelled, denying all cricket supporters of a major series that would have had significant impact on the rankings – instead the Proteas will play five one-dayers”.

The Herald’s Jamie Pandaram said requests for an explanation on India’s schedule from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the BCCI were unanswered.

It added: “They won’t admit it, but the fixtures are determined purely by television revenue. Indian broadcast moguls are not interested in Tests because they rate poorly … while ODIs and Twenty20s push their numbers through the roof.

“So there is increasing pressure from the BCCI – which sells matches for a handsome profit to television networks – to scrap Tests for more ODIs and Twenty20s.

“The ICC has not stood up to India for years and clearly isn’t about to start, by the looks of the Future Tours Programme which has been manipulated from its original plan to accommodate the BCCI’s thirst for short-format games.

“The situation is not helped by the willingness of Australia, England and South Africa to jump at every chance to play meaningless ODIs in India.”

While a blue-chip Test series quietly bites the dust in the interim, the five-day game’s dwindling tally of enthusiasts will bitterly note that firm dates have already been set in stone for version three of the lucrative Indian Premier League T20 event (March 12 to April 25 in India) and then the next ICC World Twenty in the Caribbean from April 30 to May 16.

Has just another nail been rammed into Test cricket’s coffin?

@ Neil, if you think Tests are boring then you're entitled to your opinion. But look how many of us still care about it! Maybe few people have the time to watch all five days from end to end, but you can still follow it without watching every single ball. I think that's how most people follow it. Look at golf. A tournament lasts four days. Nobody's going to watch every single shot over four days, but they will keep track of the score, if they're golf fans! If golf can survive, then Test cricket can too.

Let's do a reality check. Doesn't matter from which perspective you are looking at it, 5 day test cricket won't survive another ten years.

This decision was already taken at the ICC General Council Meeting back in June 2009, so why the sudden shock value ????...It certainly sin't a death knell for Test cricket, just a practical decision to preserve bodies in light of a busy schedule...Test cricket is still very much alive and well in India...

It's a really sad day when money talks above all else - I know sport is a business too, but Test cricket and its followers should not have to suffer as a result. ICC needs to put its foot down, and not allow any cricket playing countries to promote ridiculous T20 & IPL at the expense of true 5-day cricket - we don't all have the attention span of a mosquito on valium.

Nothing to be worried about actually, Proteas have a wonderful record in the sub-continent. Smith will be around for a long time, you will be happy to know.
ian12/7/2009 4:58 PM
sad news - i enjoy ALL cricket, and would hate to see test cricket get ignored.
Derek12/7/2009 4:43 PM
Good to see the number of guys sick of boring 20 40 & 50 over stuff the CSA should tell the Indians what to do with their rubbish if their not interested in Test cricket let's play those countries who are

Considering the result of the India/Sri Lanka series, maybe its a good idea these loosers don't go. Its time for Smith and Co to retire.

There goes the sophistication of a glorious game - tossed aside for a watered down fast food version. The game is dead, long live the game.

Many moons ago there were timeless test. This got scrapped and the 5 day matches took over. I am sure a lot of people were not happy then. It's the same now ... 5-dayers will be replaced by 1 dayers and T20 the new short exciting format. I wonder out of all the moaners here .. how many actually buy tickets and go the FULL 5 days or sit and watch THE FULL 5 days.

BCCI is ICC rest of the cricket world should tell them in a gentlemanly manner to go F them self!
AML12/7/2009 4:11 PM
The end for purist cricket is near. What a crying shame. The hit or miss cricket of 20/20 and one day 50 overs is actually becoming boring. Just watch tomorrow's 5th day between Austalia and West Indies to appreciate Test cricket. I will be up early hours to watch. Down with TV influence in Cricket.
peter12/7/2009 4:11 PM
Very sad if test cricket gets the death knell. I will always remember the wonderful innings which Graeme Pollock and Barry Richards played in the 1970 test against Australia in Durban. The way they smashed the Australian attack for 2 hours was even better than watching any 50 over or 20/20 game.
KW12/7/2009 4:10 PM
I for one love test cricket and will be wathcing SA v ENG at Centurion for at least 2 of the 5 days. I think (test) cricket lovers need to make it known that test cricket is still popular and support it at the venues for a change.
Adri Smit12/7/2009 4:07 PM
20/20 is not cricket! Its a baseball version of a game once known for its skill.I would rather see 2 or 3 sixes in a game where there is something for both batsmen and bowlers.Pitches are a disgrace to the pure form of the game giving bowlers no chance. I prefer an ODI where 250 is a competitve score.Even in test cricket we are getting 500 and 600 runs too often.Bring back the challange between BAT and BALL in ODI and test cricket.
Semloh12/7/2009 4:06 PM
What a disappointment, this test series would potentially been between the Number 1 and 2 test sides fighting for the top spot! I cant believe that the ICC would let the Indian cricket board to mess around with scheduling so close to the upcoming season.
5day lover 12/7/2009 4:04 PM
SAD! SAD! SAD! Ban India from International cricket or is this proof that the BCCI is and controls a ball-less ICC who is in running a game called "Clicket" = imitation wane bee baseball.Maybe I should move to America and watch proper baseball !
byron12/7/2009 4:00 PM
screw India and i will just throw the Pakis in there too! I would not want to travel to those to places anyways! Lets play the Aussies again!
craig12/7/2009 3:56 PM
Who run cricket in the world... India... they have the money that talks. Maybe they are scared to play us in a test... Anyway... Gary you have done wonders for them and SA did not want you as a coach..Shove it to them... and show the idios up .. Well done on your ranking.
Adams12/7/2009 3:55 PM
Cant wait for the test series here against England, the ODI and 20/20 were dismal. Quality cricket is in tests, I just hope that money doesnt kill it off. Would help if the ICC had some ( cricket) balls to stand up to the BCCI!
@fundi12/7/2009 3:51 PM
Dont blame it on Indian cricket, its the ICC fault. India is just promoting their love for the game. Their team has more talent and ability than any other playing nation. Go back to your backyard cricket.
Ronnie12/7/2009 3:49 PM
The ODI's are now even more meaningless. If we are courageous and believe in test cricket we take a stand and should not go to India. The only stand the public can take is express their views and don't watch meaningless games.
Daniel le Roux12/7/2009 3:48 PM
I'm fed up with this so-called "Disco cricket"! 20 overs, 40 overs, what's next? Are they gonna make the field smaller, give every fielder a pair of Keeper's gloves! Cricket is being bastardised, and at the current rate it probably won't even be called cricket anymore in ten years time???
Neil12/7/2009 3:47 PM
Just accept it, Test cricket's days are numbered. It takes 5 days and then often you get no result. It is boring, boring, boring. No-one has the time to watch a 5 day game from end to end, except if you are retired or jobless. I like the ODI and 20/20 format. It is quick exciting and to the point. Have your test cricket funeral and move on.
Kruger12/7/2009 3:43 PM
LONG LIVE TEST CRICKET!!! down with the BCCI
Boet12/7/2009 3:34 PM
Very, very sad! I am scared money will eventually kill Test cricket! Very sad!
Zuntino12/7/2009 3:17 PM
What a sad moment for Cricket. The day that tests are scrapped because of tv ratings.. tsk tsk!!!! That is so disgusting. Test cricket is the stuff legends are made of and it's going down the tube... What the hell is going on and why is nobody defending the test arena????????????
Fundi12/7/2009 3:13 PM
It's time to boycott Indian cricket. They are completely out of control, strangling Test cricket to death with their monstrous greed. Their players, except for Tendulkar, are over-rated flat-track bullies, prima donas and one-shot wonders. Indian cricket is killing the global game, and we need to take it away from them FAST.
sonnyG12/7/2009 3:12 PM
To be honest I would rather watch test cricket than ODI. They should rather can ODI's and just have test cricket and 20/20 cricket.
ryan12/7/2009 3:10 PM
This is a bunch of crap, we need to all stand together and let CSA know that we wont stand for it! Who wants watch endless ODI after ODI and T20's. I am sorry but thats going to get boring as hell, at least test matches have caracter and exitement! CSA could not even fill the 1st and 2nd ODI's in Gauteng vs England now we have to abandon tests, sure the tests dont fill seats either but so what lots of people still watch it on tv. I say we start supporting the test series against England and keep it alive!
