Proteas hold breath on Steyn

Cape Town - The Proteas will be hoping that Dale Steyn's hand injury will not keep him on the sidelines for an extended period.

As it happened: Sri Lanka v Proteas, 2nd ODI

Steyn was struck on thumb while bowling to Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan in the second ODI in Pallekele on Wednesday.

He was sent for a precautionary X-ray, which confirmed no fracture, but severe bruising to the hand.

He came out to bat later in South Africa's run-chase and scored 23 runs, but it remains unclear if he will be available for Saturday's third and final ODI in Hambantota or the subsequent two-Test series.

Steyn told the ESPNcricinfo website that he couldn't bend his thumb and index finger so it was impossible for him to bowl. He will receive treatment to determine his availability for the next match.

Sri Lanka won Wednesday's game by 87 runs to level the three-game series at 1-1.
