Cape Town – The Proteas, albeit under slightly new management in Nagpur, have continued their late-season re-awakening in Test cricket.

Tuesday’s momentous triumph over India in the first Test there was their second successive victory by an innings – England last tasted that unpalatable fate at the Wanderers a few weeks ago – and a return to the helm of the rankings for the first time since the series success in Australia last summer is now just one inviting win or draw from their grasp at Kolkata from Sunday.

South Africa need only win the two-match series 1-0 to seize the mantle from the Indians, and another incentive to avoid defeat at Eden Gardens will be the prospect of landing the US$175 000 the ICC gives to the team heading the list on April 1.

The turnaround in fortunes by Graeme Smith and company has been surprisingly swift, and perhaps bears out the view of many good judges that the battle to be No 1 in the world will be a see-sawing one involving three or four teams for some time to come.

It will be all about sustaining good standards by the best outfits, and certainly in Nagpur the Proteas achieved precisely that on almost every front in a satisfying, four-day demolition job which gives them a deserved extra day of “feet up” before attempting to land the truly killer blow in Kolkata.

India were comprehensively out-batted and out-bowled in the first encounter, even if they were unsettled by a pretty heavy list of “big gun” injury casualties on the batting front, which tested and then slightly showed up their reserve strength.

Their big dilemma now will be over the balance of the side as they attempt to show their mettle by bouncing back for the levelling triumph on what should be another examination of patience and durability on a funereal surface.

Their four-man attack at Nagpur, comprising just two seamers and two specialist spinners, could not prevent South Africa, spearheaded by man-of-the-match Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis, posting an imposing total after batting first.

But if they gamble on an extra bowler at Kolkata, it would then leave their presently brittle-looking batting order less properly staffed than they would like – despite some second-knock signs of backbone in the first Test from the likes of Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and reserve wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.

The last-named customer is highly unlikely to play in the second Test after being hastily drafted in for his debut on the eve of the Nagpur contest.

The Proteas will have far fewer problems over the construction of their XI, although there are ongoing concerns about the lack of confidence and form at the crease of Ashwell Prince and JP Duminy – do they tweak a winning combo or should there finally be a maiden start for Alviro Petersen?

As always they are blessed by having someone of Jacques Kallis’s calibre as their fifth bowler: even when the veteran is not grabbing big hauls he tends to apply pressure and “plug” an end tidily.

It may be a small point, but with the last ball of the second-last over before South Africa closed the deal at Nagpur, Kallis – now described as “medium-pace” on the TV credits – sent down a delivery timed at 144.2km/h.

Coming in the 107th over of a follow-on innings in typical Subcontinent heat, it said a lot about the desire of this Proteas’ attack where every bowler played his part despite rampant Dale Steyn (23 wickets in his last three Tests) rightly hogging the limelight with his fourth 10-wicket match haul.

The oft-criticised Paul Harris did an excellent “slow strangulation” job in the Indian second innings, probing away at the rough outside the right-handers’ leg stump and getting through 38 overs at exactly two runs to the over for three crucial wickets – including that of Sachin Tendulkar immediately after he had notched his overdue maiden century against South Africa in India.

Harris was as instrumental as anybody in keeping the potentially dangerous Mahendra Singh Dhoni quiet: the home captain is not normally known for only getting to 25 in a 112-ball vigil, is he?

Similarly, it is seldom that the first six of an Indian innings in their own habitat comes deep into the second dig: Harbhajan finally broke the duck over long-on off Harris with the total on 231 for six.

The game was satisfying too for young Wayne Parnell, playing his second Test for the Proteas and first on the Subcontinent: the left-armer had some success operating around the wicket and frustrating the natural flamboyance of India’s right-handers.

Nagpur was not far off the pantheon of legendary Test performances by South Africa. Now they must strive to keep their collective feet firmly on the pedal…

To all the "Graham Smith" haters, you obviously don't watch enough cricket to realise his name is actually "Greame Smith" so your opinions count for nothing, Well done S.A, amazing performance, Hashim Amla was Incredible, Jaques Kallis amazing enough said, Dale Steyn looked impossible to play. Everyone wrote off Paul Harris but looks like he's doing his job FRUSTRATING the batsmen, 17 maidens in 32 overs or something crazy like that, Wayne Parnell's stats look alot worse than his bowling was, he got alot of edges that dropped short of slips or went wide of them, Morkel looked good too. I think the only reason people could ever dislike this team is that they have so much talent and its frustrating when they don't play well because we know what they can do, I don't like hating my team though so we have to ride with the bad times, but this team is capable of so much. Remember this is with 2 out of form batsmen so imagine when they find some runs what will happen
Lorraine2/11/2010 1:07 AM
Hats off to Smith, Corrie, and Wessels! IT IS NOT OFTEN IN TEST CRICKET THESE DAYS FOR A CAPTAIN TO ENFORCE THE FOLLOW ON! USUALLY THE TEAM BATS AGAIN AND RUNS OUT OF TIME TRYING TO TAKE 10 WICKETS, HAVING MADE THE TARGET AN IMPOSSIBLE 450 OR SO RUNS!
Gerald2/10/2010 12:05 PM
Indiaman, please post here again when your team arrive in South Africa. India struggle everwhere except in the subcontinent. That is why I can't be bothered with your excuses. That said, the series is not won yet. 2nd Test will be a thriller I am sure.
@IndiaB2/10/2010 9:26 AM
Yawn, I am getting sick and tired of the exaggerating of B sides. I dont rate India at all because they cant beat the top sides at home.
India B2/10/2010 7:23 AM
Come on guys...you have basically played an Indian B side and you guys are so damn excited. Play the first side and then this will be a true 1 V 2 in test arena. If the Indians or Aussies beat you guys in your backyard minus Kallis, Amla, De Villiers & Morkel....what would you Proteas supporters have said???......I will only accept SA as the better side if they beat the full Indian side
Flash2/9/2010 10:34 PM
@Jay Vyas, Awesome summary dude... We annihilated the Indians in their own back garden, but I really hope that the selectors dont stick with the underperforming players for the next test (that means you Duminy/Prince). Why does Alviro Petersen always get overlooked?
Jay Vyas2/9/2010 9:07 PM
Let us ALL just SAVOUR this Great Performance as I see it below: 1. SA scores 558 runs after opening the innings at 6 runs for 2 wickets. 2. Smith who can be the' Danger Opener' Failed unfortunately. 3. Amla finally gets the recognition as a Class Act. 4. Kallis continues to score 100+ when really needed by SA. 5. Kallis fails to add the required 41 odd runs the next day to get that Elusive Double Ton. Feel sooo2oo2oo2oo sorry for him. 6. Amla the apprentice to Kallis actually gets that Double Ton. 7. SA notches 558 runs Without the 'magical Duminy contribution' 8. AB takes on the Indian Spinners without fear, and gets to 50+ 9. Prince remains in Slump, but got a RAW CALL... No TV Replay 10. Morkel & Parnell were deemed "stereotype' by the Indian Critics 11. Nobody in India exected the SA "STEYN" Wicket REMOVER 12. New Coaching Head & Consultant - Press wrote SA off. 13. Sehwag gets 100+ yet India FAIL. 14. Gambhir - Great Opener in 2009/10 for India FAILS in both innings 15. Tenulkar FAILS in 1st innings - But WHAT A DELIVERY from Steyn. 16. Tendulkar FINALLY scores 100 against SA in India, yet they LOSE. 17. SA takes 20 wickets in the match with their " below average Spinners?" 18.Boucher has an Injury late in 1st Innings, and plays on in 2nd innings. 19.Harris DID do well despite Critics about him being 'Average' 20. India's Spinners got WHALLOPED in their backyard. Ask Bhajji? 21. SA is the ONLY team to beat INDIA by an Innings in INDIA in 25 years. 22. SA is the ONLY team to inflict this type of defeat 3 Times in 25 years. 23. SA does manage to "Clean Up the Tail" - Emphatically I may say. 24. Kallis as a "medium Pacer" bowls a 144 km delivery in his last over. 25. Dhoni loses his 1st Test, after 14 tests, but HOW BAD WAS THIS?
Bob2/9/2010 8:55 PM
Well done boys. Very stoked with your heroics. However now over to "Indian Man" Wow you are an uneducated soul. Give credit where credit is due pal. Don't slag us off for winning. Rather have a go at the Indian team for the lack of depth on their side. You need help you chop....
MD2/9/2010 8:43 PM
BAKGAT Proteas! You really gave them a thrashing. As far as team selection is concerned, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Leave the team as it is. Just change the batting order and let Amla open with Smith and move Prince down the order where he belongs.- besides, Prince is an excellent fielder to boot. JP Duminy HAS to stay in the team. His form isn't good at the moment, but he will come good again. He is too valuable a cricketer to leave him out now. Remember when Gary Kirsten had a run of bad form? And just when everyone suggested he be left out, he would come good again. The players who excelled in the first test, may not do so in the second test. But then, those who underperformed this time around, might just to a hell of a lot better in the second test. Graeme Pollock did not always score hundreds when he played in tests... That is the magic of test cricket. Still the best form of cricket there is. GO PROTEAS! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU ALL. To be Number 1 test cricket is the ultimate. Not the one day game.
SA MAN2/9/2010 8:25 PM
@Indian Man....aw shame little man!! Are you already firing your excuses at us? A hiding in your back yard egg-head....by an INNINGS AND SOME...hahaha. I dont remember one excuse, not even by the press when we did not have some top players and losing or having to stomach agonising draws! Get a life why dont you, you complexed little whelper!!
marco2/9/2010 7:57 PM
If it was up to me to decide selection for the second test I'll drop Duminy(the KAAPNAAR) completely as he is K@k at the moment and a waste of space, time and effort. But keep Prince(the boy from PE) and bat him at his at preferred position which is number 5 instead of opening batsmen.Bring in Alviro instead to open with Smith cause usually new recruits are quite fired up to impress when given a chance-what do we have to lose hey.Duminy on the other hand is tirelessly labouring under a lost misapprehension which he acquired in Australia in 2008.
@ash2/9/2010 7:48 PM
Your stupidity astounds me. Good grief you are dumb. You are failing to grasp even the simplest of things related to a ranking system. I feel sorry for the person employing you. Man I cant believe it
Sipho Ncullka2/9/2010 7:01 PM
Surprisingly the Springboks and Proteas always do so well when the Gravey Train can be heard in the back-ground. Go S.Africa.....
Vic J2/9/2010 6:58 PM
Well done Proteas. Just imagine if G.S. let Amla get to 300 and the final day is rained out. Who will then have egg on their face. I agree, Country comes first. Maybe once Amla got his double and tried to excelerate the score, there would have been a diferent mindset. Amla is still young, when G is gone & retired, he will still be scorring big ones.
diffy2/9/2010 6:10 PM
Well played, but the sad thing is that they will choke in the next test... why dit JP and De Villiers play and not Habana?
England Cricket2/9/2010 5:54 PM
I hope the England cricketers will now realise how lucky they were to draw a series.
Nick2/9/2010 5:44 PM
Great win, indeed. But please, please, please don't tell the Proteas they're close to no. 1, lest they choke.
niggle2/9/2010 5:39 PM
Excellent result. Proteas are certainly good away from home beating Pak, Aus, Eng in recent series and now perhaps India? Perhaps they enjoy less direct media attention when "away".
Ash2/9/2010 5:19 PM
@Rob Please get the facts right --- and a return to the helm of the rankings for the first time since the series success in Australia last summer ----- We never became number 1 at any stage by beating Australia. If Smith had held out for a draw in that test in Sydney we would of become 1. We then lost another opportunity to become number 1 when we lost the test series in SA to AUS. Its only when AUS lost the ASHES did we jump them to become number 1.
Willem2/9/2010 5:11 PM
Well done boys! To make sure that we don`t lose the next test, I`ll strengthen the batting by replacing Parnell by Peterson. He then can open and Prince can bat at 6.
RoundTop2/9/2010 5:11 PM
@ Banana: You think like a banana, SA has already won many test cricket series trophies, as well as ODI series trophies. Only trophies they don't have is ICC tournament trophies, barring one I think. So ... stop complaining. The cricket team is doing their best. Its only a game. Leave this old "Boer" mentality of having to grind everyone to dust, cause it shows we are a "proud" nation. You know what the Aussies say about the "boertjie's"? They act tough, and speak tough, but deep down they have an inferiority complex. Instead of just giving it all they got, and never giving up because they love a good fight, they don't wanna give in because of their need to show that they are relevant and important. So ya boet, Proteas played well! The boys from our shores are doing well and they have given their best always, lets be happy. I can keep hashing on about this "proud" nation crap, but yeah, its utter bull and should belong in another forum.
Olive2/9/2010 4:57 PM
@ Les - I agree with you I support the Proteas no matter what why can't South Africans just congratulate them on a fine win.
Chris2/9/2010 4:48 PM
@ Rob One good win dores noit justify the comment ".....continued their late-season re-awakening ....." Time to change our cricket correspondants !
HMC_ONE2/9/2010 4:42 PM
AAAAAAH greg..... THe refreshing sound of an optomist at work!!! Thank you for reminding me how FICKLE some MORONS can be! What more do the Proteas need to do to convince MUPPETS like yourself, that we are absolute quality! What more??? Well done to our Proteas! Well played!! We once again go to India and cannot lose the series!
Nick2/9/2010 4:42 PM
Ag Greg please. Leave the doob alone bru.
JOOST2/9/2010 4:41 PM
WHEN DOES SA PLAY INDIA...OH DID THEY PLAY ALREADY
Centurion2/9/2010 4:37 PM
The toss in the second test will be crucial - the pitch will probably be a dust bowl.
Les2/9/2010 4:36 PM
Banana.... you really are one you know... Being rated over time as the best test playing nation is an excellent achievement.... Better I would say than winning a trophy here or there as a once off. I think it is clear that many 'so called' SA cricket fans, are not even fans at all.... running the boys down when they lose and criticising even when they win. Kallis not good enough, Smith this and that..... good grief..... if you dont want to support the Proteas.... then DONT... but just shut up and let us support them WIN OR LOSE (which is what supporting is a all about!!!) Well done Proteas for an incredible display of Test Cricket!!!
D the M2/9/2010 4:36 PM
Alviro doesn't really have the technique to open the batting in test cricket so I hope they don't go that route - why did they not include cover in a position we have struggled to fill for the last year? Someone like Elgar has stuck up his hand for selection, as has Kuhn, particularly now given that Boucher might be carrying an injury. Hell Petersen doesn't even average 40 in first class cricket so doesn't deserve a place in the test squad (nor does he open anymore), though he looks the part in the odi team
Marc2/9/2010 4:33 PM
Greg dude, declaring at 979 ain't gonna help them. They have to win the next test so batting for 3 days will be pointless. A draw will do us nicely thank you very much. Personally I wouldn't change our side right now despite Ashwell and JP's dodgy form, but surely there must be a school of thought that says we load our side with batters and bat them out of the game completely. They need to take 20 wickets, we don't. But I'll put my chop on the block and say we're gonna beat 'em at Eden Gardens anyway. There was a quote on Cricinfo earlier where Sehwag reckons Steyn is the best bowler he's ever faced. Kudos to the Phalaborwa Express - he'll pick up plenty more wickets in the next test. With Morkel providing bounce and Parnell the left arm variation, our attack is looking superb. Mickey Arthur must be just a tad irritated that he's not getting at least some of the credit!
Twisted@Banana2/9/2010 4:31 PM
You don't win trophies for test cricket. You're thinking of the game played in pyjamas for people with short attention spans.
GJ2/9/2010 4:30 PM
Greg???? What you smoking bro....must be good shyt hey
Whitelightning2/9/2010 4:30 PM
Ow the chokers have managed it again. With their mediocre captain I do not have to wait long for inconsistence to chip in again. India to win the next test mark my word.
John2/9/2010 4:29 PM
What a fantastic victory. Petersen must surely get a star ahead of Ashwell. For own sanity Ashwell needs a break. I'd give JP another go. While both fiel very well JP bowls a bit.
fuzzy@greg2/9/2010 4:27 PM
C'mon Greg, what are you smoking? 979- add those three numbers and u get your IQ
peter2/9/2010 4:25 PM
Excellent achievement. Now to really rub salt into the Indian wounds, this team (in batting order) should do the trick : Smith, Amla, Kallis, de Villiers, Prince, Peterson, Boucher, Botha, Morkel, Steyn, Parnell.
lolo2/9/2010 4:24 PM
Well done proteas. Now this is what this side is all about. To think of it, they outplayed england in a hard pitch that had a lot of grass covering. And now they have done the same to india in their back yard in a typical indian pitch. I dont care who says what. That is a stuff of champions. shapppa proteas shappa.
Don_C2/9/2010 4:24 PM
As delighted as I am with such a comprehensive victory, and especially the performances of Amla, Kallis and Steyn (plus good contributions from the rest of the boys bar one or two) it frustrates me even more to see how good we can play. If we'd played like that against the pommies we would have thumped them. Mind you, if we play like that against anyone we would thump them. Australia was the best test team in the world, hands down, for years and that my friends requires consistency! Good luck to the boys for the 2nd test - bring home that world no 1 ranking!!
frikkie2/9/2010 4:24 PM
@Greg: Ja Gregg look how the Pakis did in Aus. I dont think they made 979 in all the tests combined. Ann all!
F@K2/9/2010 4:21 PM
Smith. Sa won. Congrats. Had money on Amla beating that douches record. Flippin Graeme turkey!
Gaz2/9/2010 4:16 PM
Well done Biff and the ladz - Great job, a proud day for SA cricket!!!!!
INDIAN MAN2/9/2010 4:16 PM
i would not be all that proud of this win as Inida are missing 4 of their top players through injury, with them in the team things may have been very different so to declare yourself worthy world champions is like ernie else declaring himself a better golfer than tiger woods when playing tiger with one hand tied behind his back... you guys come accross as fans that would scream and cheer for ernie while he is one shot ahead with one whole to play against the handicapped tiger... haha you pathetic south africans always taking advantage when the other teams are down.
Don_C2/9/2010 4:14 PM

not so many comments now then!! where are all of you that criticise so easily when the boys are going through a bad patch but have nothing good to say when they pull of a magnificent victory
Zolani 2/9/2010 4:05 PM
If you actually wake up at 05h30 to watch the cricket you would have seen that Prince was given out off the elbow guard, unlucky. dont just read the score card. Do i believe he should open NO, do i believe he should be in the team YES, but where, As for Harris, Great job, blocking the 1 end so that they could not score, you put the pressure on and allowed the quicks to take the wickets, all in all a great TEAM effort Great captain Smith. and for those questioning Amla about getting another 25 runs in 3 overs, it took him 4 overs to get 1 run to go from 199 to 200, but if you watch, read and listen to cricket you would no this. well done team.
Centurion2/9/2010 4:01 PM
I was never in favour of keeping the same team just because they win. Selection should look at individual (and not collective) performance. Harris has done well enough to retain his place - the problems are with Prince and JP. JP is an investment for the future so I would like to see him retain his place (for the remainder of this and another series) however Prince should be replaced - or does he deserve at least one more chance in return for his past contributions to the team? Whatever way they go they should not change batsman 1,3,4,5 - the individuals in those positions work very well.
Sherz2/9/2010 4:00 PM
Our boys were just rusty after a very long break for the England tour. Now that they're gelling together & are gona be an unstoppable force in World Cricket!!!! Biff still needs to lose weight tho
Zolani@banana2/9/2010 4:00 PM
Number 1 in test cricket outways hit and hope limited overs cricket. this is the real test who needs a 20/20 trophy when you number 1 in test cricket .Basimane (Boys)! Re motlotlo ka lona (We are proud of you) Tshwarang thata(Keep it Up)!
Graham2/9/2010 3:59 PM
the past has always shwon that the Proteas get a big head when they win for the first time, now the rest of series will belong to India and all becuase of the "Big Head" - prove us wrong Proteas
@Greg2/9/2010 3:59 PM
is that 97 for 9???
patrice2/9/2010 3:57 PM
Did anybody else notice that yesterday and today we had "canned " crowd noise and applause, and crowd visuals taken on Sunday spliced into the TV commentary ?
Roy2/9/2010 3:56 PM
Rob, a very good summary of the match and one of your better scripts. All , dont get carried away and there is a second test to come and remember what happended before in India and with the Aussies. In the mean time, Dear Rob, go easy on those pork pies!
gadget2/9/2010 3:52 PM
@Greg you can say what you like about the NEXT test, but today I am proudly South African, Well done Biff and the boys
Banana2/9/2010 3:49 PM
Oh crickey not all this no1 in the world malarchy again! Great win today, four days of high calibre cricket.... Win a trophy then lets celebrate!
Fanie2/9/2010 3:32 PM
Well done boys. Well deserved win.
Cherry2/9/2010 3:30 PM
Wonderful overall performance with some exceptional indvidual contributions. This result is what this team is capable of. Now to see all-round contributions from others who have been having a rough time of it lately. No team can rely on only a handful of consistent players. Question for the critics out there.... are the back-up players of the same caliber?
Greg2/9/2010 3:28 PM
India will kick ass in the second test. If you follow India and Pakistan, when they do hit back they hit very hard, they score big (declare @979)
