Nagpur - South Africa were eyeing victory after Dale Steyn picked a career-best 7-51 to trigger a dramatic India collapse on the third day of the first Test on Monday.

The right-arm quick bowler polished off the last six India wickets for 12 runs in 7.4 overs after tea to bundle them out for 233 and help the visitors enforce the follow-on at the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium in Nagpur.

Following on, India were tottering at 66/2, trailing South Africa by 259 runs on the first innings with eight wickets in hand.

Murali Vijay was batting on 27 with Sachin Tendulkar on 15 when stumps were drawn for the day.

Steyn struck again in India's second innings, sending back Virender Sehwag for 16 while Morne Morkel pegged back the off-stump of the other opener, Gautam Gambhir (one).

India's slide began with the dismissal of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (six) in the first over after tea.

Subramaniam Badrinath's resistance in his first Test appearance was cut short in the next over when he chipped Steyn straight to short mid-wicket. His 56-run innings came off 139 balls and included seven fours.

The other debutant, Wriddhiman Saha was out off the first ball he faced from Steyn. Zaheer Khan and Amit Mishra played on to their stumps before Harbhajan Singh was trapped lbw, giving Steyn his 13th five-wicket haul in 37 Tests.

The only positive for India was the 109-run knock by Sehwag who hit 15 fours and also shared 136 runs for the fourth wicket with Badrinath after India were reeling at 56-3.

But Sehwag was dismissed shortly after reaching his 18th Test century when he sliced a quite wide delivery from paceman Wayne Parnell (1-31) to cover where Jean-Paul Duminy took a well-judged catch.

Replying to South Africa's first innings 558/6 declared, India got off to a disastrous start, losing their three top-order wickets inside the first hour.

Steyn got rid of Tendulkar (seven) and Vijay (four) after Morkel (1-58) had dismissed Gambhir (12) to reduce the hosts to 119-3 at lunch.

Gambhir, coming into the series with eight centuries in his last 11 Tests, was out off the first ball he faced when he was caught by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher after poking at an away-going delivery.

The second and final Test between the world's top two teams begins in Kolkata on February 14.

South Africa can snatch back the number one Test ranking from India if they win the series while the hosts need just a draw to remain on top.

Great one mate!!! Couldn't have said it any better. dogg must be of Australian breed - quite common and fu@#in stupid.
@ THE MAN2/8/2010 4:43 PM
And who might that black captain be? Did I miss something? Would be nice though, especially if he is a merit player and not a transformation selection.
@DOGG2/8/2010 4:37 PM
For a country whose claim to fame is "World Champs' at Broom Ball - yes its a recognised national sport - chasing a ball with a broom, and the only country in the world stupid enough to play it. Congratulations! By the way, Australia 1 bt Australia 2 with an upset for 3rd and 4th where, A4 bt A3.
@THE MAN2/8/2010 4:33 PM
THE MAN - you are a plonker, why will Smith be replaced after the tour if the results are good? Get a life you miserable sod.
Fanie2/8/2010 4:30 PM
Well done boys. We are nearly there , but the fat lady has not sung yet. Go in for the kill now , there is still some big batsmen to topple before the lady starts singing.

Don't get ahead of yourself!!!!!!!
@DOGG2/8/2010 4:10 PM
I agree with you, Australia is the best and most consistent team i have ever seen. with that in mind, my blood is still green so if you like Australia that much, you should f@k off there Biatch!!! .

Hey Corry, why the profanity, Bro.? I do agree with your sentiments that there is still quite aways to go in this test, but let's give the Protea's their due!! Well done, guys, well done!
@The Man2/8/2010 4:01 PM
Get a life buddy. The article was about Steyn and his awesome display. Bye Bye
David2/8/2010 4:00 PM
@Dogg, If SA cricket makes your blood boil so much, y still entertain commenting about it? Why still go the extra mile to look at rankings compared to trophies! Why don’t you just shut the hell up and leave us positive supporters to say well done on a day that SA has made us proud! DOGG YOU DORK!
Centurion2/8/2010 3:59 PM
We need to keep the run rate down as well as get wickets. If they bat for another 4 sessions (worst case) at 3.5 per over then that will leave us with 160 odd to get in 60 overs - don't want to have to bat again on this pitch. Keep the runs down and chip away.
Shiraj2/8/2010 3:56 PM
way to go...am so proud and now that Sewag is out, its all on Tendulkar...too much for India too handle i think...how far to let us bat again and only 8 wickets left...its optimism that makes us SA fans celebrate now...woo hoo! congrats to steyn, amla and kallis, brilliant individual contributions to winning this match!
Danny2/8/2010 3:53 PM
I won't call it on the brink of victory.... still a lot of hard work left.... don't forget 2001 Ind vs Aus in India..... Aus 445, Ind 171...Ind follow on... India 2nd innings 657... bowl Aus out for 212... India won from follow on.... but I am sure history won't repeat itself...
DOGG2/8/2010 3:49 PM
@Skiballas, oh are we talking maths, SA played in every tourment and have NOTHING....i will not even compare to the Aussies. Why dont SA go to Zim next and stamp their authority. SA can be number 1, but there is only on best. if you need help to calc pls let me know. GR 2 maths i failed, but it takes more to fool me.
thabo2/8/2010 3:45 PM
Brink ? or 8 wickets , miles apart !!!
TonyT2/8/2010 3:40 PM
I am gobsmacked! I thought we would do well to pick up 3 or 4 wickets today on that lifeless pitch, but 12 INDIAN WICKETS IN THE DAY! Awesome stuff. Awesome Steyn! Many overseas commentators were praising his spell today as one of the best in a long while, and I have to agree 100% with that. This guy makes something out of nothing. Coupled with Smith's brave (and so far correct) decision to enforce the F/O - and suddenly SA are looking good to beat the best team in the world in their home.
Centurion2/8/2010 3:29 PM
Fortunately CSA did not try to hold on to Simons - this is probably his biggest contribution to SA cricket.
ManUtd4Eva2/8/2010 3:29 PM
Go Manchester United Go.... Rooney for President!!!!!!
Centurion2/8/2010 3:27 PM
Hopefully we get Sachin early... then the game is ours. Well done boys - don't let it slip.
Skiballas2/8/2010 3:21 PM
Yeah DOGG, thats why Aus is not in the top 2 ranked teams, cos as long as they are around SA wont be number 1? Did you pass gr 2 maths?
Gabba2/8/2010 3:18 PM
The Man - what are you talking about. I am black(coloured) but I know that Smith is The Man for the job. He is definately the all time best captain that we have ever had. Good luck boys. S.A. is behind you.
AML2/8/2010 3:12 PM
@S.A.B. Ntini still the best in the world? The fumes from your M3 making you sleep Rip van Winkel?. At last we have a strong Fast bowling combination. Still worried about the spin department though.Great stuff Dale. Go Proteas!
DOGG2/8/2010 3:10 PM
i cant believe, you guy's are sooo excited, the game is not over yet and we are all celebrating........when the protea's win a tournament then only can you guy's talk......SA will alway's be second best as long as Australia is around
MR GOODCAT2/8/2010 3:09 PM
@JBVANWYK AND CORRY... U R BOTH PLANKS. IF YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY THEN YTF SAY ANYTHING!! GO PROTEAS I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!!
David2/8/2010 3:05 PM
@Corry: You must be such a sad and lonely being as you can not for once admire positives but alway a negative hoe! What the hell you idiot!

Do you really understand the term "On the brink of vitory" Things are looking good but there are 2 days left in this test.
king protea2/8/2010 2:47 PM
well done Steyn! Pse complete demolition of Indian side tomorrow. Meanwhile deafening silence from all those Steyn critics who often frequent this forum......this guy is world class en thoroughly deserves his spot as No 1 bowler in the world. Enuf said
THE MAN2/8/2010 2:45 PM
perhaps we will hold onto steyn in the new look transformed team after the tour to india...south africa is on the brink of having its first permanent black captain i history and we can't wait.Question is will smith still want to play cricket under a black capatin when he gets sacked from the captaincy after the tour to india??? i dont think so
mds2/8/2010 2:45 PM
To early to call victory, South Africa had a masive third wicket partnership and Tendulkar can certainly bat long. it looks good though

Just one day it would be nice to read a Cricket artical, and the comments that follow, are actually written by posters who watch, and understand cricket and who write with facts and Not emmotions, Great cricket so far, worth watching from 6 in the morning.
Corry2/8/2010 2:40 PM
jeezuz, only halfway through the game and in typical SA arrogance we've already won the game. Granted India have a helluve mountian to climb but Tendulkar can stand there for two days and knock 300. Weren't we supposed to whitewash the Poms as well? Be assured the in the next test the wicket will start crumbling after lunch on Day 1.
Ereckson Neluheni2/8/2010 2:35 PM
Job well done guys,Dale Steyn you let me to rember another fast bowler Andrew Nel.We do appreate you contribution to the team.Lets focus the future and forget the past events. May God Bless you all guys
