SA duo deserve spots - Kepler

Cape Town - Former SA captain Kepler Wessels says Rilee Rossouw (21) and Dean Elgar (24) thoroughly deserve their spots in the Proteas' training camp.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday named a squad of 28 players to attend a pre-season training camp at the Arabella Golf Estate in Kleinmond next week.

The two Chevrolet Knights batsmen and bizhub Highveld Lions fast bowler Craig Alexander are the only players included that have not yet played for South Africa.

And Wessels believes Rossouw and Elgar's form over the last three year's has justified their inclusion. He also feels it creates a healthy situation at the top level of the South African game.

"It's a good thing, because it also puts pressure on the other batsmen," Wessels told the Volksblad newspaper.

The former Protea opening batsman feels one or two spots could open up in South Africa's Test and One-Day team's, and views the two Knights playmakers as strong candidates to fill those gaps.

He believes the duo will learn a lot from Proteas coach Gary Kirsten - who was also an accomplished batsman.

The full Proteas squad is: Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Craig Alexander (bizhub Highveld Lions), Hashim Amla (Sunfoil Dolphins), Loots Bosman (Sunfoil Dolphins), Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors), Mark Boucher (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans), JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Faf du Plessis (Nashua Titans), Dean Elgar (Chevrolet Knights), Paul Harris (Nashua Titans), Colin Ingram (Chevrolet Warriors), Jacques Kallis (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Heino Kuhn (Nashua Titans), Ryan McLaren (Chevrolet Knights), David Miller (Sunfoil Dolphins), Albie Morkel (Nashua Titans), Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans), Robbie Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Vernon Philander (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Ashwell Prince (Chevrolet Warriors), Rilee Rossouw (Chevrolet Knights), Jacques Rudolph (Nashua Titans), Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Rusty Theron (Chevrolet Warriors), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors), Roelof van der Merwe (Nashua Titans), Vaughn van Jaarsveld (Sunfoil Dolphins).

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
