Cape Town - Richard Levi and Ethan O’Reilly have been called up to the South Africa A squad for the first time for the Six-Team T20 tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 13 to 23.
This is part of a busy period for the South Africa A team as they will also be touring Zimbabwe from June 27 to July 9 to take part in a triangular ODI series against their hosts as well as a powerful Australia A combination.
The other competing teams in the Malaysia tournament will be Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as a combined team of ICC Affiliate nations that will draw players from Malaysia, Afghanistan, China and Singapore and will play under the banner of the Malaysia Cricket Association.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday announced the squads for these two tournaments as well as the Emerging Players' Squad that will travel to Australia to defend the title they won against Australia, India and New Zealand last year.
Jacques Rudolph of the Nashua Titans will again captain the A side while Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras batsman Stiaan van Zyl will lead the Emerging Squad.
"The squads we have selected reveal the exciting amount of depth to the talent available. And we had to make some difficult choices," commented selection convener Andrew Hudson.
"Albie Morkel and Colin Ingram both asked to be left out of these tours for personal reasons and we were happy to do this as they have both had a lot of cricket lately. Albie's wife is expecting their second child and he understandably needs to spend time at home while Colin has been on the road in India for more than four months now.
"There are a few minor injury concerns around some of the players such as Dale Deeb of the Emerging Squad who has a shoulder problem, but the Medical Committee is confident these will be cleared up before the various tours start."
Levi opened the batting for the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras during their successful Standard Bank Pro20 campaign and fully deserves this promotion to higher honours while O'Reilly, who opens the bowling for the bizhub Highveld Lions, has performed outstandingly in the Pro20 for the last two seasons.
