Pybus confirmed for Cobras job

Cape Town - Western Cape Cricket has announced that Richard Pybus will be the new coach of the Cape Cobras.

The announcement was made after Pybus signed a three-year contract with the franchise. He will take up his duties immediately.

“We are thrilled to be able to have the services of a coach of Richard’s calibre,” said Andre Odendaal, chief executive of Western Cape Cricket.

Odendaal said Pybus was chosen after an exhaustive selection process.

“We had some excellent candidates but Richard has a remarkable CV and we believe he is the right man to help the Cobras achieve the goal of winning a higher percentage of trophies, while at the same time ensuring that the Western Cape continues to develop as a nursery of talent for South African cricket.”

Mohamed Ebrahim, chairperson of the Board, concurred saying “The bar in domestic cricket is being raised all the time and we are looking at Richard Pybus to take us to the very top. The business of professional cricket has become extremely results driven and Western Cape Cricket owes it to the cricketing public to concentrate on annexing limited overs trophies consistently, and also attracting home semi finals and finals at Sahara Park Newlands.”

Justin Kemp, captain of the Cape Cobras said, “It’s wonderful to have a coach on board with the track record of Richard. I know the structure and discipline he will bring to the Cobras will stand us in good stead. The success he achieved at the Titans was exceptional. With his assistance and guidance, we can hopefully continue the excellent standard of cricket we played this past season, and even improve upon it. We want to become a dominating force within South African domestic cricket.”

English-born Pybus, 46, has had a distinguished coaching career.

A graduate from Portsmouth University in England, with a Further Education certificate from Greenwich University, Pybus started his coaching career at Selborne College in East London in 1991. He was the Border under-19 coach from 1994 to 1997, with three of his players going on to play international cricket.

After establishing the Border Cricket Academy in 1997/98 he became coach of the Border senior team in 1998/99 and guided them to the finals of the SuperSport Series and Standard Bank Cup in his first season in charge. Both achievements were firsts for the province. Border again reached the SuperSport Series final in 2000/01.

He was the coach of the Pakistan national team, firstly as a consultant – when they reached the final of the 1999 World Cup - and later on a full-time basis until 2003.

He was head coach at the Titans between 2005/06 and 2008/09, during which time the franchise won six titles in four seasons: the SuperSport Series three times (two of the titles were shared after drawn finals), the MTN Domestic championship twice and the Standard Bank Pro20 crown once.

The 2009 South African Coach of the Year spent the past season acting as a consultant and executive coach.

Odendaal said there were 16 “very good” applications which were whittled down to a short list of five – Pybus, Vincent Barnes, Adrian Birrell, Allan Donald and Andy Moles. “It was an exceptionally strong short list, with all the candidates having coached or played at international level.”
