SA edge England in Wanderers head-to-head

Cape Town - Not that it will count for much, but South Africa will go into Thursday's third Test against England at the Wanderers knowing that they have the upper hand over their opponents at the venue.

The sides have met eight times in Johannesburg since 1956, with the Proteas having won three of those matches while England have won two and there have been three draws.

The eight matches are split up into two batches - four before isolation, and four after.

South Africa have a 2-1 win advantage in the post-isolation era, with their innings and 74-run win in 2010 putting them ahead.

There have been some historic moments at the ground.

In 1995, Michael Atherton's undefeated 185 in the second innings rescued a draw for his side in what was one of the most resilient displays of batting you are likely to see, while in 1999 Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock combined for 19 of the 20 England wickets to blow the visitors away in that year's series opener.

Even in the early days there were special performances - Hugh Tayfield's nine wickets in the second innings of the 1957 Test standing tall.

Here, we take a trip down memory lane and look at the eight matches played between the sides at the 'Bullring'.
