Cape Town - The Proteas could feature in a four-nation Indepedence Cup alongside India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2018.
According to the Financial Express website, President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Thilanga Sumathipala, confirmed that they will be hosting the 'Independence Cup' to commemorate Sri Lanka's 70th Independence Day.
The quadrangular tournament is expected to take place in early February, but that is complicated by the fact that India will be touring South Africa at the beginning of 2018.
"The Indians would be visiting South Africa in the time when we are scheduling the tour," said Sumathipala, as quoted by the dailymirror.ik.
"So this matter will be discussed with India and South Africa during next month's ICC meeting in Dubai regarding the Independence Cup and then we all (Sri Lanka, India, South Africa and Pakistan) will accommodate each other."
Cricket South Africa announced a home summer tour against India, where the two sides compete in four Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is during the 2017/2018 period.
Fixtures for India's tour to South Africa have yet to be confirmed.
The SLC board will reveal the dates and venues of the quadrangular event once the formal procedures are finalised.
This mini-series will also aid the four nations with their preparations for the 2019 World Cup.
