Proteas to face Boks at Newlands

Cape Town - Following two successful Proteas v Springbok clashes in 2013 and 2014, the eagerly anticipated Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup clash makes a return to the sporting calendar next month.

The T20 match will be played at Newlands on Thursday, December 8 and will be followed by the World Rugby Sevens Series tournament on December 10 and 11, which will cap off a fantastic sporting week in Cape Town.

In further good news for the event, leading online prepaid electricity, data and airtime distributor, Prepaid24.com, has been confirmed as the title sponsor. Prepaid24.com is a strategic business partner of Blue Label Telecoms and an online retailer of its prepaid services.

“Having a title sponsor for an event of this nature goes a long way in ensuring that we achieve and meet our objectives of contributing generously to the Nelson Mandela Foundation,” explained Cricket SA’s Head of Commercial and Marketing, Clive Eksteen.

“The day promises to be lots of fun, but also serve as a memory to the legacy left behind by our late president, Nelson Mandela, as we celebrate the contribution he has made to our beautiful country.

“As we have set a target of raising One Million Rand for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, I would like to thank Prepaid24.com for their naming rights sponsorship and look forward to fruitful relationship over the next two years and beyond,” added Eksteen.

The day promises to be loaded with entertainment and activities for all fans. Both squads will be announced in the lead-up to the match.

“Pitting our boys’ cricket skills against the Proteas the past few years has been a lot of fun, but it also allowed us to honour the legacy of Madiba, who knew the power of sport in our lovely country,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“We’re thrilled to get the leather balls, willow bats and pads out again for a good cause and an evening of fun at arguably the most picturesque cricket venue in the world.

“The Mother City will be caught up in sporting spirit at that stage, with the Cape Town Sevens also on the agenda, in what promises to be an unforgettable few days of top-class international sporting action.”

Lunga Nene, media analyst at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, commented: “The Legacy Mandela Cup takes place as we mark the third anniversary of Madiba’s passing. Supporting his legacy is more important than ever.

“It is also a thrill for us to be able to celebrate Madiba through sports, which as we know helped him accomplish a lot to bring people together.”

Fans are also encouraged to make their donations to the Nelson Mandela Foundation via a dedicated SMS line on match day.
