Steyn in, Bavuma out as Proteas bat first

Cape Town - The Proteas have won the toss and elected to bat first in the first Test against India at Newlands on Friday.

LIVE: Proteas v India - 1st Test, Day 1

With the wicket boasting more than a tinge of green, the first session with the new ball is considered crucial.

There had been a lot of debate around team selection in the build-up to the match, particularly on South Africa's side.

In the end, though, it was decided to give Steyn his first Test cap since November 2016.

Temba Bavuma, meanwhile, misses out.

Teams:

Sout Africa: Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis (captain), Quinton de Kock (wk), Vernon Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Kagiso Rabada

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah
