PinkDay raises R1.7m for breast cancer awareness

Cape Town - In a nail-biting finish, the Proteas rose to the PinkDay challenge by maintaining their unbeaten in pink, winning streak at the recent One-Day International (ODI) against India at the Wanderers on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

Adding to the success of the day and beating previous fund-raising efforts by almost triple, R1.7 million was raised for new PinkDay beneficiary, the Breast Care Clinic at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The PinkDay partnership between Cricket South Africa (CSA), Wanderers and Momentum has raised millions of rands and saved countless lives by spreading the message that early detection saves lives.

A huge thank you must go out to fans, corporate contributors and players, as well as media houses and ambassadors who made a significant contribution to the fund raising and success of PinkDay 2018.

Wanderers Stadium and event sponsors Momentum led the charge with donations of R56 000 and R100 000 respectively.

This year the players themselves donated R100 000 from their PinkDay match fees. Proteas team sponsor Standard Bank matched this with a donation of R100 000.

AfriSam also cemented their relationship with PinkDay by decking some of their trucks in the PinkDay insignia, running a social media campaign and donating R100 000.

JCB Kembach also came to the party with bright pink pitch rollers and a donation of R5 000. Other CSA partners who supported PinkDay included SAB / Castle Lager who donated R40 000 and New Balance who donated R10 000 from sales of replica pink Proteas shirts.

Official PinkDay ambassadors, Miss South Africa Ade van Heerden and fashion icon David Tlale, helped make the fans aware of what they needed to do: #PitchUpInPink and donate.

Tlale lent his flair to a specially designed Relate bracelet that added over R90 000 to the total raised.

This year three successful auctions were held for PinkDay.

Wanderers donated a suite, for the soldout match, and the 947 Breakfast Club held an exciting on-air live auction, with MTN blowing the competition away with a winning bid for R150 000.

Not to be outdone, SuperSport also held an online auction of memorabilia which brought in a hearty contribution of close to R400 000. Pink helmets, signed by the players, were also auctioned to corporate sponsors and brought in close to R150 000.

A massive shout-out of thanks must go to the fans. A portion of ticket sales from a packed, sold-out stadium added to the total raised. On match day Momentum volunteers were out in force in the stadium with collection cans and SnapScan codes. Fans at home also contributed by calling the PinkDay SMS line and via SnapScan.

PinkDay 2018 has truly set the bar high in achieving maximum breast cancer awareness and raising the most money ever for this worthwhile cause. All money raised from PinkDay 2018 will go to the Breast Care Clinic at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, run by Doctor Sarah Nietz and her team of dedicated specialist nurses, who provide access to quality breast care.
