Morkel starts Proteas' fightback at Lords

Cape Town - Morne Morkel led the Proteas fightback during the morning session on day 4 of the first Test against England at Lords in London.

LIVE: England v South Africa

Morkel (3/37), accounted for the wickets of Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance while strikes by Kagiso Rabada (2/46) and Keshav Maharaj (3/63) saw the hosts finish on 182 for 9, a overall lead of 279.

England started circumspectly, adding just 20 runs to their overnight score in 10 overs before Morkel struck twice, first removing Cook (69), caught in the covers by Temba Bavuma and then adding Ballance (34) caught behind the wicket.

England's hero in their first innings, captain Joe Root (5) was then bowled by Maharaj and suddenly the home side were in a fair amount of trouble.

Ben Stokes (1) soon followed, LBW to Rabada while Maharaj saw Jonny Bairstow dropped by Vernon Philander in the deep.

However, he then added the wicket of Moeen Ali (7*) while Rabada bowled Dawson for a duck to see the players to lunch.

Bairstow remained on 28 not out.

England will be aiming for a lead of over 300 which will prove very difficult to get on the final day for the Proteas.
