Langeveldt axed as Gibson makes key changes

Cape Town -  Proteas coach Ottis Gibson confirmed on Monday that Charl Langeveldt will not be retained as the bowling coach of the national team.

Gibson held a press conference in Sandton after the Proteas defeated Bangladesh in the final T20I on Sunday by 83 runs to complete a historic clean sweep.

The Proteas whitewashed the visitors in all formats on their tour and became the first South African team to do so against touring opposition.

Gibson had decided to keep Langeveldt (bowling coach), Neil McKenzie (batting coach), Claude Henderson (spin bowling coach) and Adrian Birrell (assistant coach) as his backroom staff for Bangladesh's tour.

However, Gibson on Monday announced that Langeveldt's contract had come to an end, although the former West Indian bowler did not confirm the full identity of his technical team.

Birrell is expected to vacate his current role, while McKenzie is likely to be retained.

Those to fill the fielding and spin-bowling positions are at present unclear.

"There are names at the moment. Obviously, Cricket South Africa have to make that happen. At the moment there are just names of people that I think can do a good job with the team, some overseas, some local," Gibson said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

Gibson explained that he will take over the responsibilities as bowling coach, having previously worked with the England national team.

"I will do the bowling, then there will be a batting coach, a fielding coach, an assistant coach and a spin bowling coach - so four, plus myself," said Gibson.

Gibson's next task will be to get the team ready for their four-day Boxing Day Test against Zimbabwe and their India and Australia home series' in early 2018.
