ICC ‘reviewing’ Faf incident

Cape Town - The International Cricket Council was on Wednesday examining the video footage supposedly showing Test series-winning Proteas captain Faf du Plessis shining the ball during the Hobart contest against Australia with the aid of mint-infused saliva.

Asked for a reaction to the incident by Sport24, an ICC spokesperson at its Dubai headquarters said: “The ICC has been alerted to the footage.

“(It) is currently reviewing the incident from the perspective of it being a possible breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.”

The incident reportedly occurred during the 54th over of the Baggy Greens’ second innings on Tuesday; Peter Nevill was then dismissed by SA speedster Kagiso Rabada next ball.

Law 42.3 of the MCC’s Laws of Cricket states that a fielder may polish the ball “provided that no artificial substance is used”.

Proteas team media manager Lerato Malekutu has told at least one South African-based journalist since the incident that it is an ICC matter and “they have not raised any concerns with us”.

The tourists thrashed the embattled Aussies by an innings and 80 runs to ensure their third away series success over those foes in a row.
