Elgar: Cape Town deserves more Tests

Cape Town - Proteas opener Dean Elgar says it is "rude" that Cape Town does not get more than one Test match every year.

There were 14 650 spectators in attendance at Newlands on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Monday, and Tuesday is expected to attract another large crowd.

In contrast, there were 6700 in attendance on day one of the Boxing Day Test in Port Elizabeth - easily the biggest crowd attendance for that Test.

The Newlands crowd erupted when Elgar reached three figures on Monday, and his celebration revealed just how pumped he was.

It was in stark contrast to the century that Stephen Cook scored on day three of the second Test when there were very few in attendance.

For Elgar, the Cape Town crowd deserves more.

"It’s great. We could play more Tests here, to be honest with you," Elgar said.

"I think playing just one Test here is actually a little bit rude on the Newlands crowd because they do come out here and support and they do prepare good wickets which is what we want.

"Players feed off that because we know that it is going to be a sellout on day one and two. It’s awesome.

"It’s a little bit sad when you play at a smaller Test venue and there is not a lot of support. Newlands has never failed … it’s always had great crowd support. As a player, you always want to come back."
