Cape Town - Ahead of the third Test against India in Nagpur, the Proteas will have fond memories of their one previous Test outing there.
During a two-Test series in February 2010, South Africa won the first Test at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium by an innings and six runs.
It’s the only time the Proteas have played a Test in Nagpur, but the current crop will take heart from that performance.
Hashim Amla, the current SA Test captain, scored a mammoth 253 not out as he, along with Jacques Kallis’ 173, catapulted Graeme Smith’s charges to 558/6 declared.
Fast bowler Dale Steyn then took 7-51 to rip India out for 233 in their first innings, before taking another three in their follow-on innings of 319 to grab a 10-wicket haul in the match.
Amla, in particular, will be hoping to replicate that performance of five years ago, as the current SA Test skipper has struggled for runs in recent times.
However, Steyn has been ruled out of the upcoming Test with a groin injury and his absence will be dearly felt by the Proteas.
Other members of the South African XI in that Test that are still part of the current squad include AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Morne Morkel.
India rebounded to win the second Test in Kolkata by an innings and 57 to share the series, but the Proteas will nevertheless take heart from their sole previous Test outing in Nagpur.
Overall, India and South Africa have faced off in 29 Tests, with the Proteas winning 13, India seven and nine matches ending in draws.
In Tests played on the subcontinent, both teams have won five with two draws.
