Behardien yearns for Proteas Test debut

Cape Town - Proteas middle-order batsman Farhaan Behardien still dreams of representing South Africa in the longer format of the game.

Although Behardien is a regular member of the South African shorter format squads, the right-handed batsman dreams of representing the Proteas in the Test arena.

The Titans batsman is hoping that he can prove his worth with the bat in the upcoming Sunfoil Series four-day tournament, where the Titans will defend their title.

Behardien, who averages 40.04 with the bat in first-class cricket, acknowledges that although he is 'not bad', he feels that he could improve on his game in order to get a Test nod.

“That (average) is not bad for a middle-order batsman in South African cricket, but I wish to change that average to 43 or 44 by sheer volumes of runs in the first three franchise-matches for the Titans,” Behardien said on the Titans' official website.

Behardien is part of South Africa’s one-day squad taking on Ireland and Australia and will miss the Titans' first two first-class matches.

“I will miss the first two Sunfoil Series matches, but when I get an opportunity in the franchise games, I want to utilise it.

“I am still dreaming of representing South Africa in Tests. We have seen that Temba (Bavuma) has broken into the ODI squad, so it can be done," he added.

This is after Temba Bavuma, along with Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo, were called up for the upcoming ODIs to be played against Ireland and Australia.

“Who says I cannot play Test cricket for South Africa. I just need to notch up as many runs as possible to apply pressure while being consistent,” added the 32-year-old.
