Cape Town - Hashim Amla cruised to his 25th Test century as South Africa continued to boss the fourth Test against England at Centurion on Friday.

Amla and debutant Stephen Cook had rejoined on 107/1 after the lunch break, and they batted through the entire middle session to see the Proteas sitting pretty on 224/1 at tea.

Amla had been dropped on 5, and just after lunch it was Cook who benefited from poor England catching.

On 47, the Proteas opener edged an in-swinging delivery from Stuart Broad. Jonny Bairstow again dived to his right, and while he got a hand on it this time he could not hold on.

Cook got through for two, and in the next over he had his maiden Test 50 with a beautiful cover drive off Broad for four.

With all of the attention firmly on Cook in his debut, Amla was moving along swiftly.

He brought up his own 50 in the next over with a boundary against the expensive and wayward Chris Woakes.

The pair continued scoring quickly, with the run rate holding at above four to the over.

It wasn't a case of going after the bowling, but more of waiting for the bad balls that kept coming from the England attack.

Amla, particularly, was playing some glorious shots and he brought up his century off just 131 balls.

At the break Cook (91*) and Amla (102*) had put on 189 for the second wicket.
