Sports minister lauds Amla

Cape Town - Proteas star Hashim Amla, who recently won the SA Sports Star of the Year award, joined fellow SA Sports Awards nominees and winners at a special breakfast in Sandton on Friday morning, where they were presented with their prize money by sports minister, Fikile Mbalula.

Each nominee walked away with R10 000 while category winners won R50 000 each.

Amla walked away with R250 000 and a Lexus IS250 S Auto, which he gets to drive for the next 12 months, after he beat off stiff competition to win the coveted Sports Star of the Year award.

Mbalula welcomed Amla to the event, saying: "Hashim Amla is a real human being. You are a role model and you inspire the youth."

Amla received a standing ovation when he walked onto stage and responded by saying: "It is humbling to be here today(Friday) and I am grateful for the support from the fans. I would wlso like to thank the Minister for this recognition.

"I am sorry I was not able to be at the recent SA Sports Awards, but it is great to be here today, and meet one of my childhood heroes, Baby Jake Matlala."

Amla, who also won the CSA Fans Cricketer of the Year award at the SA Cricket Awards gala dinner in June, has also been nominated for the LG ICC People's Choice Award, which will be presented at the ICC Cricket Awards in London on September 12.
