Cape Town - Proteas skipper Graeme Smith has congratulated Muttiah Muralitharan after the retiring Sri Lankan spin wizard took his 800th Test wicket in Galle on Thursday.

Writing on his social networking Twitter site, Smith tweeted: Murali 800 test wickets!!!!brilliant.great test career and a really good man.glad I don't need to face him in test cricket again:)

Muralitharan bagged his 800th Test scalp with his final delivery in Test cricket on day five of the first Test against India.

Muralitharan entered the Test looking for eight wickets to reach the magical 800-mark.

A return of 5/63 in India's first innings left the offspinner looking for three more wickets in India's second innings - a feat he duly achieved when he had tailender Pragyan Ojha caught at slip by Mahela Jayawardene.

Muralitharan also has 515 ODI wickets to his name.
