Search for Protea coach begins

Johannesburg - Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday launched the process, which is expected take a couple of months, to appoint the new head coach of the Proteas.

The panel appointed to make its recommendation to the Board of CSA had its first meeting on Tuesday to review the list of applicants and plan the way forward.

"We are not able to announce the names of the candidates on our short list because of confidentiality issues, as some of the candidates are currently still under contract," commented CSA CEO Gerald Majola.

"What is highly gratifying is the quality of the applications received from leading coaches both from around the world and from our domestic structures. It is a clear indication of the standing that South African cricket enjoys internationally and of the potential that our side offers."

Majola said that there would be no rush to fill the position and it was important that the process should be allowed to take its course. "We understand the keenness of the nation to know the name of the successful candidate but the selection must be a thorough process to make sure that we get the best person for the job.

"The interview process will start in the week of May 16 and this will give us time to brief the candidates fully on the issues we wish them to address. Panel interviews, Presentations and In-Depth Dimensional Assessments will all form part of the comprehensive selection process."

Majola also announced that Professor Johann Coetzee has been added to the panel and will lead the In-Depth Dimensional Assessment process. "It is very important that we have an independent voice from outside the structures of Cricket South Africa," he commented.

Professor Coetzee is a Human Development Consultant and Consulting Psychologist. He has had a distinguished academic career at the Universities of the Free State and North West and many other institutions. He has assessed, coached, counseled and mentored countless leaders in his career.

He also has a strong sporting background having represented Free State in rugby, swimming and water polo.

The panel now consists of: Professor Johan Coetzee, Gerald Majola (CSA CEO), Andy O’Connor (CSA Cricket Committee Chairman), Boeta Dippenaar (SA Cricketers’ Association representative), Andrew Hudson (CSA selection convener) and Corrie van Zyl (head coach, CSA High Performance Centre).
