The tourists were boosted by the return of pace spearheads Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, who were rested for the preceding Twenty20 series which their team won 2-0.
India chose leg-spinner Amit Mishra to partner off-break bowler Ravichandran Ashwin, who is appearing in his 100th one-dayer. All-rounder Stuart Binny will be the third seamer behind Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The five-match series will be followed by four Tests.
