Proteas veterans safe for now

Cape Town - South Africa's national convenor of selectors, Andrew Hudson, says they won't change much for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, but hinted that some of the veteran players' future would be discussed after that series.

Hudson expressed his disappointment at the team's inability to win the Test series against Australia after seemingly being in control in the second Test at the Wanderers.

Hudson was particularly unhappy with the way in which some of the batsmen threw their wickets away at the "Bullring".

"I think the guys played rash shots and our score in the first innings was definitely below-par," Hudson told Die Burger newspaper.

However, he feels they shouldn't change too much for the Sri Lanka series, starting with a Test match at SuperSport Park in Centurion on December 15.

"Guys who were good enough to play for the team a month ago are still good enough."

The former Protea opening batsmen did, however, hint that the future of some of the veterans in the team would be discussed ahead of their Test series against New Zealand in March.

He didn't reveal which of the veteran players' positions might be in jeopardy. But players like Ashwell Prince and Mark Boucher - who both struggled with the bat in the recent series against the Aussies - could be in trouble if they again underperform against Sri Lanka.

Jacques Rudolph is another player who's position in the team is by no means safe. He may not be regarded as a veteran, but is nevertheless a senior player.
