Petersen sets up Foundation

Johannesburg - Proteas Test batsman Alviro Petersen on Tuesday launched a foundation to create better opportunities for the next generation of South Africans.

"I carefully chose the following three beneficiaries - Fontein Primary School, Alviro Petersen Cricket School and 2nd Chance - with these objectives in mind," Petersen said in Johannesburg.

"Fontein Primary School in Port Elizabeth is where it all started for me and I am eternally grateful to them for the foundation they have given me in life. I want to assist them in creating better education and opportunities for all the children who attend the school."

The Alviro Petersen Cricket School would give young cricketers, from underprivileged backgrounds, the opportunity to live their dreams of playing cricket for South Africa.

Petersen created a partnership with 2nd Chance, a registered non-profit organisation, to assist with drug abuse and rehabilitation and to focus on abuse against women and children.

"These are the ills of our society today and I want to contribute to a better world."

The foundation would look at other projects across South Africa assist in making a difference in other schools where possible.

The trustees of the foundation were Robert Hodson (chairperson), Petersen (founding member) Steve Easton, Arthur Turner and MC Dryer (auditor).

The Foundation aimed to be fully operational next year.
