Johannesburg - Chevrolet Warriors left-hander Colin Ingram has been called up to make his Proteas’ debut in the forthcoming limited overs series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
The Standard Bank limited overs squads also feature the return of Robbie Peterson of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras after a year’s absence of non-availability.
Rusty Theron was a member of the Standard Bank Pro20 squad that competed in the recent ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies but has yet to be capped after playing in only unofficial warm-up matches and is in line to gain his first official international appearance.
The selectors have also recalled Heino Kuhn as wicketkeeper for the Pro20 series against Zimbabwe in the place of the injured AB de Villiers.
De Villiers is expected to be fit in time for the MTN ODI series against Zimbabwe while Wayne Parnell has been cleared to resume playing from the beginning of next month and returns to the Proteas’ squads for all three formats.
The Castle Test squad to play Pakistan in a two-match series is unchanged from the group that did duty in the West Indies with the exception that Parnell returns in place of Ryan McLaren.
Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn are being rested for both Pro20 series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
“They are two key players for the ICC World Cup next year and we need to manage them carefully,” commented selection convener Andrew Hudson. “The next ICC World Twenty20 is 18 months away and this also provides us the opportunity to look at several younger players.”
Ingram, David Miller and Theron are certainly all players who fall into this category.
“We only have a relatively small number of ODIs before the World Cup and it is our intention to go in with our strongest combination in all these matches,” added Hudson.
“There are several players who are close to selection and domestic form will give them the opportunity to stake their claim.
“Ingram has done that and certainly deserves his chance after playing outstanding cricket in both the MTN40 and Standard Bank Pro20 domestic competitions and there is a clear message that good form at this level will be rewarded. We did that with David Miller for the last tour to the West Indies and he has made a promising start to his international career.”
