CSA hails Amla, Kallis, Ntini

Johannesburg - Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday extended warm congratulations to Hashim Amla on being named South Africa’s Sports Star of the Year at a glittering banquet at Sun City on Sunday evening.

The ceremony was attended by a host of sporting personalities as well as South Africa’s deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, and Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula.

“This is truly a Red Letter Day for Cricket South Africa and particularly the Proteas,” commented CSA CEO Gerald Majola.

“Hashim has already been honoured both by the cricket fans and his cricketing peers through the CSA Annual Awards and now by sporting fans across all the other sporting codes as well.

“He is clearly the most popular sporting personality in the country right now as far as our biggest constituency is concerned and that is the fans, who are the lifeblood of any sporting organisation.

“Hashim has been wonderfully consistent over the course of the period under review with a set of achievements in both Test match and ODI cricket that has seen him ranked the No 1 ODI player in the world and also in the top 10 in Test cricket. At one stage he was ranked No 2 in Test cricket.

“But I think what really counts is his humility and the role model par excellence he has become for present and future generations,” Majola added.

“Two of our other great players, Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Ntini, were also honoured with SA Legends’ awards and that is a deserved tribute to what they have achieved over the years. Again both are and will continue to be role models of what can be achieved.

“Makhaya’s career story is indeed the stuff of which legends are made while Jacques is unquestionably the greatest player that South African cricket has produced in the modern era and probably ever.

“We salute a trio of Proteas who have made all South Africans proud.”

Amla can complete a Grand Slam of awards at the ICC Awards Function in London in September as he is a finalist for the ICC Peoples’ Choice Award.
