AB wants to bat at No 3

Cape Town - Star South African batsman AB de Villiers says he would prefer to bat at No 3 in all formats for the Proteas.

De Villiers is currently the world's No 1-ranked batsman in Test and One-Day International cricket, but when asked if he thought he was the world's best he responded in modest fashion.

"Wow, I'm not so sure about that one," he told the Beeld website.

"I think it would be a good test if I could for example bat at No 3 in all three formats of the game. That would be ideal, but at the moment Russell (Domingo, Proteas coach) feels I need to be protected a bit at No 5 in Test cricket because I'm also the wicketkeeper. The only format of the game where I bat where I really want to is in T20 cricket, at No 3," continued De Villiers.

When asked who he thought was the world's best, De Villiers singled out India's Virat Kohli, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul as three players who stand out.

De Villiers and his Proteas team-mates are currently in Sri Lanka where they are preparing for three ODIs and two Tests.

The first ODI starts in Colombo on Sunday.
