Proteas call up Kleinveldt

2012-10-10 15:34

Cape Town - Rory Kleinveldt , uncapped at Test match level, has been included in the Proteas' Test squad for their three-match series in Australia next month.

The Cape Cobras all-rounder has represented the Proteas in two T20 International matches and would have made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year, but for injury.

The series ranks the No 1 ranked Proteas against third-ranked Australia with the three Test matches due to be played in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

“We have given a fully deserved vote of confidence to our Test XI that did so well on the recent tour of England and we have just tweaked our reserve strength slightly to suit expected conditions and the tactical situation,” commented CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson.

“It is tough luck for Lopsy (Lonwabo Tsotsobe) to miss out but we just feel that Rory’s ability to hit the deck hard will give us a valuable option, particularly at Brisbane and Perth. He also adds batting depth to the lower order.

“The fact that he finished second on last season’s four-day bowling averages behind only Vernon Philander speaks for itself and he continued his form for the South Africa 'A 'side at home to Sri Lanka and away in Ireland.

“We have gone for Faf du Plessis, who joined the Test squad in England during the series, as the reserve batsman because he will give us cover in the middle-order positions. We already have Jacques Rudolph to cover the top of the order if necessary.

“Thami Tsolekile will again be our back-up wicketkeeper and provide cover for AB in the event of injury or if the tour selectors decide to lighten his workload.

“Robbie Peterson’s selection as second spinner speaks for itself. His form has been outstanding across all the formats in recent times.

“Marchant de Lange was not considered because of injury. He needs to get back into three-day and four-day cricket to come back into the picture,” concluded Hudson.

The Proteas will leave for Australia on October 27 and any players still involved in the Champions League Twenty20 will join them as soon as their commitments to that tournament are complete.

Proteas squad:

Graeme Smith (Cape Cobras, captain), Hashim Amla (Dolphins), AB de Villiers (Titans), JP Duminy (Cape Cobras), Faf du Plessis (Titans), Imran Tahir ( Highveld Lions), Jacques Kallis (Cape Cobras), Rory Kleinveldt (Cape Cobras), Morné Morkel (Titans), Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions), Robin Peterson (Cape Cobras), Vernon Philander (Cape Cobras), Jacques Rudolph (Titans), Dale Steyn (Cape Cobras), Thami Tsolekile (Highveld Lions).

      NOOOO Not Kleinveldt!!!!!!!

      daleinn - 2012-10-11 07:59

WTF ... if players are performing they deseve to be selected. We need more bold selection from the panel.. and this is only a start... how would you expect younger talent to be even considered, if we allow mindsets to be rigid ... dont just say no, say why ?

      Hansie.Crook - 2012-10-11 09:07

That is the problem here... People will say a player shouldnt be selected but fail to state WHY NOT.....

  • paul.maarman - 2012-10-10 15:49

...as always, Good Hunting boys...Punish them Aussies...!!

      luke.watskots - 2012-10-11 07:45

  • Hansie.Crook - 2012-10-10 15:51

Lobsy dropped?? How do you drop a player that never played a single test match in the England Tour?? Did he perhaps not serve drinks right?? Anyway Congrats to Rory and Good Luck to the Proteas.

      wesley.green.3597 - 2012-10-10 15:56

haha. i was thinking the same. oh well! goodluck to the boys! Parnel may need to be next, batters seem to love facing him! (thats ODI and T20 though)

      thabo.malose.31 - 2012-10-10 17:17

What badluck for lobsy. He must just go back, put in the performance and make the selectors regret their decision.

Good squad, glad to see Faf and thami there, just one problem “Thami Tsolekile will again be our back-up wicketkeeper and provide cover for AB in the event of injury or if the tour selectors decide to lighten his workload. He should be there to play, period!!! AB must not keep in the test matches!!!

  • jason.coenraad - 2012-10-10 16:00

Injury? I thought he was not considered due to smoking pot???

      luke.watskots - 2012-10-10 16:37

      Of so iets!!!!

  • zipho.best - 2012-10-10 16:11

I laud CSA selectors for sticking with same group, those waiting in the wings must work hard for recognition. Rory deserves his place he has been very consistent over the past few years.

  • unclejb.vansiths - 2012-10-10 16:21

Lopsy misses out, what??? the guy has been on tour for the past few months and has hardly had any game time, he could've been playing domestic cricket at home instead of carrying drinks all the time. And next thing his reward is being dropped citing a weak excuse of him not being able to hit the deck hard on ozzy pitches (how different are they to SA pitches I wonder). What a load of BS!!

      luke.watskots - 2012-10-11 08:52

      CHOP!!!

what a team!!!....but i would have loved to also see De kock there as a keeper to groom him for the future

      mthi4life - 2012-10-11 11:39

De kock needs a few more seasons in Domestic Cricket. If he still performs he will be in the team.Look at Parnell in the team too soon and look where that got us.

  • raymond.pieters.313 - 2012-10-10 17:16

Send the Aussies waltzing.Good luck boys!

  • gavinnovis - 2012-10-10 18:12

Well done, Rory... 2nd in bowling averages behind Vernon is no mean feat. Your selection is testimony as to how form and commitment should be recognized/rewarded.

  • nathi.mnisi.7 - 2012-10-10 20:00

Good luck to the boys! Would have loved to see De Kock in the team, however if he was selected and had a bad tour then he would of been another Levi case, so I would rathet they blood him here at home against New Zealand. Like the look of the team tho

  • Jbyej Junaid Itaintaday - 2012-10-11 00:39

everything in this country is so Political! Hudson failed 30 times b4 they dropped him! kallis played bout 20 unsuccessful innings b4 he became confident! Lopsi had 19 out of 20 good games he gets dropped! Albie Morkel takes 1 wicket every second game & hits a 6 every 10th game! Lopsi is one of the better 20twenty bowlers & gets dropped! well done Rory on ur selection but u need 2 perform every game becoz they wnt drop their off field buddies

  • Jbyej Junaid Itaintaday - 2012-10-11 00:42

      Why NOT call up Kleinveldt???

      gert.swart.393 - 2012-10-11 20:08

Because his man boobs shake all over the place when he runs in to bowl.

  • gert.swart.393 - 2012-10-11 06:15

    Ek kots sommer!

  • sean.cilliers - 2012-10-11 11:47

De Kock doesnt even keep for the Lions, how can they consider him for the Proteas..his keeping is not of an international standard. Kleinveldt is second in first class cricket behind Philander and is a dangerous batsman...good selection.
