Smith eyes Pro20 semis

Altus Momberg

Cape Town – Graeme Smith will be one of many Capetonians that will be backing the Titans and Warriors in their remaining Twenty20 games.

The Cape Cobras will advance to the semifinals if either the Warriors or the Titans win on Friday night.

Smith, who captains the South African cricket team, is hoping to play in the knockout rounds for the Cobras to get game time under his belt before the test series against Australia. The first test starts at the Wanderers on February 26.

The Proteas skipper missed the recent one-day and Twenty20 series’ in Australia with an elbow injury and fractured hand.

However, he is well on the road to recovery and hopes to slot in at training with the Cobras next week.

The Cobras on Wednesday played their last game in the group phase. Their game against the Lions in Potchefstroom ended in a draw.

It appeared as if the Lions were coasting to victory, but experienced swing bowler Charl Langeveldt took two wickets with the last two deliveries of the game to rescue the Cobras’ limited-overs season.

The Capetonians finished their Pro20 campaign with 10 league points.

The Dolphins top the log with 11 points from 4 games.

The Titans (4 points from 5 games), who are still in the hunt for their first win in this year’s series, take on the Eagles (8 from 4) in Centurion on Friday evening. The Warriors (9 from 4) play the Lions (4 from 4) in Port Elizabeth.

The Titans cannot overtake the Cobras as they can get a maximum of 9 points.

Only one team therefore has to fall out to book the Cobras’ spot.

If the Lions lose on Friday evening, they can no longer overtake the Cobras.

Should the Lions win, they also have to beat the Dolphins Sunday to get beyond 10 points.

If the Eagles lose against the Titans and the Warriors are defeated by the Lions, only the winner of Sunday’s match - between the Warriors and Eagles – can overtake the Cobras.

Then it would not matter if the Lions beat the Dolphins because the loser of the game in Port Elizabeth will drop out.
