Cape Town - Justin Kemp hit boundaries off the last two balls to carry the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras to a five-wicket victory over the Nashua Titans in the opening Standard Bank Pro20 match at Sahara Park Newlands on Friday evening.
It was the perfect start to this season’s Pro20 competition with the Cobras chasing down the highest ever second innings target in this format of the game at this venue of 176.
Richard Levi earned the Master Blaster award for his innings of 68 for the Cobras off 45 balls (3 fours and 4 sixes). He shared partnerships of 53 for the second wicket with Herschelle Gibbs and 65 for the third wicket with Owais Shah.
Once Levi was dismissed, the Cobras needed 38 off the last 26 balls and the big-hitting Kemp got them across the line.
The Titans were unlucky to lose the bowling services of Albie Morkel who suffered a groin injury while batting and was not able to play a role in the field. It did not, however, stop him from playing a role with the bat. He made an unbeaten 50 off only 25 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes and shared an unbroken partnership of 65 for the 5th wicket with Farhaan Behardien in 6 overs.
Earlier the Titans, who won the toss, had been boosted by a partnership of 108 for the second wicket between Jacques Rudolph (45 off 37 balls with 3 fours) and Roelof van der Merwe (65 off 40 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes).
